McCarran International Airport is the seventh busiest airport in the United States and North America.

International Society of Glass Beadmakers Gathering 2018 - Las Vegas 1

Las Vegas is unique among cities in the United States. The history of Las Vegas is fascinating; from its earliest days as a Native American oasis to the Wild West to a glittering global tourism mecca, Las Vegas has seen and done it all.

Famous for luxury casinos and show palaces offering non-stop recreation on the “Strip,” the city has over the years became synonymous with glamour. However, since the late 1980s, Las Vegas has acquired another identity as a respected hub for business, finance, transportation, and services. Still the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” it has actively and successfully culti- vated a diversified economy. The Las Vegas visitor can certainly enjoy legal-ized gambling but can also take advantage of the diverse range of cultural and recreational opportunities offered in the city and the surrounding area.

As often as you have seen it on television or in a movie, nothing can prepare you for your first sight of Las Vegas. The skyline is hyper-reality, a mélange of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and one very large pyramid. It is sensory overload, but in the space between the visual madness, there’s a bit of something for everyone, whether you want a successful conference, a relaxing getaway, or something in between.

The chances of getting bored in Las Vegas are slim at best. Starting on the Strip, you could spend days ogling at the architecture, people, and constant street activity; wonder at the appropriated skylines of New York-New York, Paris Las Vegas, and The Venetian; get your camera ready for the delightful dancing waters of the Fountains at Bellagio and, of course, the lava-spewing drama of the Mirage Volcano.

Don’t miss the Conservatory and Botanical Garden at Bellagio where, each season, enormously talented horticulturalists transform this 14,000-square-foot floral playground into a showcase of distinctive sights and colors. While there, be certain to see Dale Chihuly’s Fiori di Como which covers the lobby ceiling with over 2000 pieces of hand-blown glass sculptures.

Las Vegas has also become one of the premier shopping destinations in the world, with both brand and esoteric labels crowding the high-end malls. But here, shopping can actually be a very unique experience. Check out the Roman-themed street scene at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace and the indoor version of Venice at the Grand Canal Shoppes, complete with its own canals and gondoliers! Of course, for a quieter and simpler shopping experience, don’t miss the great values at the Las Vegas Outlet Mall, very close to the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa.

Las Vegas started as a cowboy town, but when the Hoover Dam was built, it became a gambling destination with buffets and prime-rib specials. Not long after, the general tourist crowds followed, and the dining scene has grown from afterthought coffee shops to celebrity chef-helmed meccas. Today the city covers just about every genre of food imaginable at every price point. Nowhere in the world can you find as many celebrity chefs in one compact space as in Las Vegas. From casual and simple to an amazing epicurean destination, you’ll find everything and anything that you want at nearly any time of day or night.

Las Vegas comes alive at night, with a club scene that rivals anywhere for its intensity and enough dazzling shows to give Broadway a run for its money. Marquee at The Cosmopolitan and XS at Encore are two of the hip generation, party-spot options these days while all of the Cirque du Soleil productions are certainly worth their ticket prices. If you can snag tickets for a headliner like Céline Dion, Criss Angel, or Jennifer Lopez, you’re in for a real treat.

With so much to experience, no wonder Elvis Presley said it best: “Viva Las Vegas!”

Postcard ProjectDeadline for Submission: March 20, 2018

Heather Trimlett, Chairperson for the 2018 Postcard Project is on a mission and fired up!

“I love the ISGB Postcard Project and want to see it expand, so I have agreed to chair the project for the 2018 conference. My goal for 2018 is to have 125 postcards in the collection, available for purchase at the Gathering.

Yes, I agree it is an ambitious goal, but with your participation, I really believe we can make this happen! These postcards are used to inspire and capture the attention of bead lovers, jewelry designers, artists, and collectors. Many people collect our postcards from year to year, and they are always one of the most popular items at the conference. It is easy to participate and great fun, but you don’t want to wait until the last minute to design your postcard. I’m thinking bigger and better next year, so don’t miss the chance to get your work seen by a broader audience.

Ask yourself this question: Is it time to take the leap and have your work professionally photographed? Great photos have been opening doors for me for years, and you’ll be bursting with pride when you see your work photographed by a professional. It’s worth the investment.”

The sale of the ISGB postcard project, with your postcard included, will help support the ISGB. And every participant receives one free complete set of postcards. Watch for Heather’s special tips and helpful hints in upcoming issues of the monthly ISGB Bead Release newsletter. You can also email her for advice at [email protected].

Remember:• Photograph your postcards; donate 125 to this project • Finished postcards can be any size, but NO LARGER than 5.5”x

8.5”• Remember to keep your postcard design simple and clean• All postcards must be new for 2018• Include your name, address, telephone number, and email

address with your postcards

Mail the postcards featuring your work to:

Silent AuctionDeadline for Mail-in Submission: March 19, 2018. Submissions may also be dropped off in person at on-site check-in.

The Silent Auction is an important event for ISGB and for its fundraising efforts. Support the organization and donate a bead, gently used tools, books, glass related-items, and more to the Silent Auction. You do not have to attend the Gathering to donate to this great event. As a bidder, this is a wonderful opportunity to add to your collection of beads and to help support the ISGB’s educational programs. This is an on-site auction and you need to be attending the Gathering to bid.

Please send your donation before the conference begins. Receiving them in advance of the Gathering allows the wonderful volunteers that work on this event the opportunity to document your donation, complete the bid sheets, and prepare the auction display layout before everyone arrives at the conference. Thank you for your donation.

Include your name, mailing address, email, the retail price of your contribution, and a brief description of the item(s). Send your contribution, which must be received no later than Monday, March 19, 2018, to:

This is a hands-on, one-stop shopping experience where you can see, touch, and get serious about the tools, glass, and information that you need.

VolunteersHelp Create Success

Volunteering is an integral part of The Gathering each year. Each volunteer helps to keep the conference running, from stuffing bags to greeting attendees at every presentation and event, and we appreciate all of the time given to help everything run smoothly.

Volunteers help prior to the start of the conference and during conference hours, from early in the morning until late at night. Help make the 2018 Gathering the best yet—volunteer! Invest just two to four hours of your time. This is also a chance to network, make new friends, and learn a thing or two about the inner workings of the ISGB.

Look for volunteer information when you register online for the 2018 Gathering. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Daigle, Volunteer Manager, [email protected].

Commemorative Bead

Heather Trimlett is a highly respected inter-national instructor, flameworking artist, and a recipient of the ISGB’s distinguished Hall of Flame Award. Her knowledge of glass bead-making is extensive, shaped by over 25 years at the torch. Heather’s work approaches perfection and pushes the envelope in shape and form.

“You would think I was inspired by color when you look at my work, but often my big-gest pleasure comes from the technical chal-lenge. As with most things, simple is hard to do well and I am a perfectionist. Every bead I make has something in it I’ve tried to do better than the last. I love the bright energy of primary colors and hope I will always be as vibrant and enthusiastic as those colors are.”

Heather’s first attempt at beadmaking was in 1989 when the American glass bead move-ment was in its infancy. By 1992 she had a torch and in 1993, attended her first SGB Gathering in Prescott, Arizona. Since teaching her first class in 1994, Heather has packed classrooms around the world. She is a natural instructor—encouraging, demonstrative and patient. The questions from her students make her study each and every move of her hands or the position of her glass in the flame; she loves knowing and understanding the work and the glass so well.

A born problem solver, Heather has designed tools to make her glass beadmaking easier, coveted by her many students. Her passion for sharing knowledge is indefatigable. She loves making beads and has no intention of slowing down. That is great news for all who admire and collect her work.

This Commemorative Bead is available for purchase by conference registrants only at the price of $100. Preorders will be taken during online registration and beads will be delivered at the conference in Las Vegas.

Beads of Food…Feed the Soul

Food nourishes the body and is an important part of our lives. While sustaining us, we also know that it comes in fun shapes, and a variety of colors. The Arizona Society of Glass Beadmakers invites you to stretch your talents and create very special beads based on the theme of food. Nourish the body, the imagination, and the soul.

In an exciting new program for the 2018 Gathering, all beads will be donated to Beads of Courage as part of their first ever Virtual Gallery. These beads will be showcased on the Beads of Courage website through high quality images for three months, noting the name of the piece and of course, the artist! Supporters will be offered the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win one of the Gallery beads. Proceeds raised from the sale of raffle tickets will benefit the mission of Beads of Courage.

Beads of Courage will design a poster featuring all the beads created and donated, with artist recognition to accompany each bead. This will also be distributed to Beads of Courage member hospitals for them to share in the visual delight of supporting bead artists. This is a similar event to the organization’s Beads in Space Exhibit.

Please take advantage of this chance to help the Beads of Courage mission by donating a bead, and ensuring an image of your work will reach a much wider audience. By creating an exhibit for all to see, Beads of Courage will support participating artists, engage the larger community in a fun way to win an artist original bead, and create a legacy poster that can be shared with Beads of Courage members.

The beads will be on display throughout the 2018 Gathering and the crowd favorite will be awarded a $50 gift certificate. A very special thank you to the ASGB for its generous support and sponsorship of the 2018 project!

NOTE: Please ship your bead in a well wrapped, sturdy box, and be certain to insure and track your package. You must include all of the information found in the form on this page, it is important. Entries are due by March 1, 2018. Send your bead and form to:

Sculpting Nature-Inspired Pendants in Soda Lime GlassThis workshop focuses on working off-mandrel in soda lime glass to create sculpted pendants inspired by nature. For many beadmakers, the mandrel can be a bit of a “security blanket.” Learning to work off-mandrel expands the beadmaking repertoire and pushes the understanding of glass. Students will explore several pendant designs: leaves, flowers, caterpillars, butterflies, bees, and learn the necessary strategies for working off-mandrel: hot and cold seals, reading (and maintaining) heat, and planning design. Additionally, discover multiple techniques for adding detail and color to flameworked jewelry. This playful day will be filled with lots of useful tips & tricks that students can integrate into their own beadmaking. www.mzglass.com

Loving the Lathe!Do you want to add additional dimension or texture to your glass creations? Then try coldworking, especially with the lathe! The lathe is an amazingly versatile machine, allowing the artist to shape, carve and finish large and small pieces. In this class, students will learn how to use the lathe in a variety of ways on beads, cabochons, and other small pieces. This class will feature the debut of a new lathe designed by Covington Engineering especially for beadmakers, which is small enough for individual studios, yet maintains the power and versatility of larger machines. Students will learn how to shape glass, carve designs, make lenses, and finish their pieces on the lathe. While the class will focus on the lathe, flat laps and belt sanders will also be available for use, along with quick tutorials and individual guidance from the instructor. All supplies, including sample beads and/or cabochons to coldwork, will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring their own beads, cabochons or other small items to work on. It is the instructor’s hope that after a day exploring its possibilities, you, too, will love the lathe! [email protected]

Working with Seed Beads Made Simple and ColorfulWorking with seed beads does not have to be complicated or follow a strict pattern. In this workshop you will learn to make a beadwork ribbon in graduated colors. Find inspiration in beaded art and nature and start blending your own bead colors. Use beads the same way a painter uses his palette of colors. Learn simple tricks and techniques that make beading relaxing. You can match your own lampwork focal bead with the ribbon to make a necklace. With the skills from this workshop, you can venture further into the world of tiny beads and start making for example bracelets, scarves and necklaces. For beginners, the focus will be on the technique of beading. For those who already have beadwork skills, the focus will be more on blending colors and using beadwork in different ways.www.floorkaspers.nl

Making Your MarkLearn the basics of building murrine cane by creating your initial in glass. One of the best ways to sign your work has always been to create a signature or initial cane. Murrine is an ancient process of creating a rod in glass that has an image that runs the length of the cane. It can then be pulled to a smaller diameter and used to create fine details in a small space. Techniques translate to borosilicate glass.jodiemcdougallstudios.com

Grand Canyon Skywalk Tour

Reservation deadline: March 5

Travel two-and-a-half hours to walk among the clouds at the Grand Canyon Skywalk. See breathtaking sights and experience the Grand Canyon like never before. Located at Grand Canyon West on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Grand Canyon Skywalk opened to the public on March 28th, 2007. The structure, consisting of a U-shaped cantilevered glass walk jutting 70 feet past the rim of the Grand Canyon, was originally envisioned by Las Vegas businessman David Jin, while taking part in a Grand Canyon tour in 1996. With the help of Las Vegas design firm Lochsa Engineering, Jin’s creation is sturdy enough to hold the weight of a dozen fully loaded 747’s, and strong enough to withstand winds up to 100 mph. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin led the first walkers on the Grand Canyon Glass Skywalk in a private ceremony on March 20th, 2007.

Located at Eagle Point where the natural rock formation of an Eagle is prominently in view for all to see, this glass horseshoe-shaped bridge enables visitors to walk beyond the canyon walls at Grand Canyon West, suspending them 4,000 feet above the riverbed and providing an unparalleled view of this natural wonder.

PRICE INCLUDES: Deluxe motor coach transportation; professional tour guide; admission to Skywalk, lunch; bottled water on coach; all gratuities; all applicable taxes.

NOTE: Personal belongings, including cameras are not allowed on the bridge. To protect from dropping any items into the canyon or onto the glass, you will be asked to store your items in the provided lockers. Photos of the Skywalk may be taken from the side with personal cameras. Professional photos of you on the bridge are available for purchase after your walk. Children must be able to walk on their own on the glass bridge.

Opening Night Reception

Welcome to the 2018 Gathering in Las Vegas celebration. This special evening is the time to mingle, renew old acquaintances, meet new friends, and enjoy a fantastic dessert reception, cash bar, and more.

This year, you can once again support the Beads of Courage program. The Beads of Courage mission is to provide innovative, arts-in-medicine supportive care programs for children coping with serious illness, their families, and the health care providers who care for them. They work diligently to transform the treatment experience for children coping with chronic, life-threatening illness through their programs. In the 11 years since the program’s inception, the organization has established programs in over 240 children’s hospitals in the United States, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

Bring beads to donate to the organization of any size or shape. The preferred hole size is 3/32” and larger, but 1/16” holes will be accepted. Do not use reduction glass, frits, powders, or enamels that leave a metallic surface on the beads. The inside of the bead should be free of bead release and there should be no sharp corners, sharp edges on the bead holes, cracks or protrusions that would easily break off, including hearts with long, delicate tails. Beads must be fully kiln-annealed. Please remember that these beads are worn and handled by children and should be sturdy enough to stand up to wear and tear.

This evening is about celebrating our organization, friends coming together, supporting Beads of Courage, and, of course, having fun. Don’t miss this great kickoff to the conference!

Hoover Dam Tour

Reservation deadline: March 5

Hoover Dam is one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century. A National Historic Landmark, it is the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, standing at more than 725 feet above the Colorado River. With 17 generators producing 4 billion kilowatts of electricity a year, it also is one of the country’s largest hydroelectric power facilities. Operation and maintenance of the facility are solely supported by revenue from power sales.

Begin the tour with the history of Hoover Dam and how it came to be. Afterward, a guide will escort you to an elevator for a 500-foot descent to get a up-close look at the power plant generators housed at the base of the dam. Guests will also see the original diversion tunnels and stand atop a giant, 30-foot pipe where they can feel the rumble of Colorado River water racing through it. The view from the dam also offers a breathtaking look at Lake Mead, the country’s largest man-made reservoir. Although water levels have been low recently, Lake Mead can store up to 9.2 trillion gallons of water, equal to two years of the river’s annual flow. It also has become a popular recreation area, sought out by more than 9 million visitors each year.

PRICE INCLUDES: Deluxe motor coach transportation; professional tour guide; admission to Hoover Dam; guided tour of Hoover Dam; all gratuities; all applicable taxes.NOTE: This tour is NOT accessible for visitors with wheelchairs or crutches.

Laura DoneferKeynote Speaker

Our Keynote speaker this year will be the prominent and celebrated glass artist Laura Donefer. Using glass as her primary medium for over 35 years, often in unconventional ways and in combination with diverse materials, Laura is known for her non-traditional approach to the material.

Renowned for her innovative colourful blown glass and flameworked Amulet Baskets, she also pushes the boundaries with work that explores ideas concerning memory, assault, bereavement, joy, and madness. Laura is also the creator and instigator of the wacky and exuberant Glass Fashion Shows and to this date has organized 14 of them. The 2018 Gathering will include frequent opportunities to view the video of the 2016 “Crazy Corning Glass Fashion Show” presented during the Glass Art Society Conference at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Laura Donefer was trained as a glass artist at Sheridan College School of Craft and Design, outside of Toronto, and was an important part of the faculty. In demand as an exciting teacher, Laura teaches internationally, and has a very demanding exhibition schedule as well. Her art is included in many museum collections, including the Corning Museum of Glass, The Museum of Art and Design (NYC) and the Musee des Beaux Arts in Montreal. Currently she is part of “Fired Up, Contemporary Glass by Women Artists,” an exhibition of more than 50 important glass pieces from the past 6 decades on display at the Glass Pavilion of the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.

Laura has been the recipient of many diverse awards and accolades such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Glass Art Association of Canada, the prestigious Honorary Membership Award from the Glass Art Society, and the International Flame Working award for extraordinary contributions to the glass art world, to name a few. Most recently the Ontario Craft Council awarded Laura the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award.

At the Gathering Laura Donefer will offer up her perspective on life, art, and living with glass. Surely she will share her love of kale, dachshunds, and her wonderfilled paddles with the Mighty Dave kayaking the waterways near their home in the wilds of rural Ontario, Canada.

Kristen Frantzen Orr & Jelveh JaferianBirds of a Feather: the Give and Take and Rewards of Collaborating“Birds of a Feather” is a collaborative presentation by Jelveh Jaferian and Kristen Frantzen Orr, detailing a bit about their own work, workspaces, and working styles; and then about how they came together to collaborate on two different series so far. Each artist learned to combine her own vision with that of the other, in essence making the collaborative work a third entity. The two will talk about how ideas flew and then beads flew back and forth between studios located in two different states; technical issues, such as bird heads that insisted on flying off in reheating accidents; and other funny and honest happenings that occurred. They both agree that the process of collaborating enabled them to combine strengths and to grow in new directions. www.kristenfrantzenorr.comwww.jelvehdesigns.com

Open Torch Experience 2018

Open Torch in Las Vegas is a diverse, and multi-faceted event. Enjoy a casual atmosphere of sharing information with torch, kiln, glass, and other equipment representatives; and as the evening progresses, catch up with friends and make new acquaintances as Glass Craft & Bead Expo attendees join in the fun! This is also a great time to reinforce lessons learned in a workshop or try a new technique. Enjoy a beverage bar as well as exciting glass demonstrations.

Karina Guevin and Cedric Ginart will be featured demonstrators for the evening. Individually known as established glass artists, their collaborative works reveal both their individual voices and the resultant harmony of their joined efforts. Karina’s training as a glass artist and sculptor is brought to bear in her glass sculpture and transformative jewelry that celebrates femininity, sensuality and happiness. Cedric’s fascination with glass was born during his studies in the sciences and work as a scientific glassblower. Together Karina and Cedric have taught many places including The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, The Pilchuk Glass School and the Pratt School in Seattle. Their work is shown widely in Canada and internationally. www.karinaguevin.comwww.cedricginart.com

Please note: Torches will be set up and open for anyone to use with, as in previous years, 30-minute time limits, which will be enforced as needed. Open Torch is for testing equipment and not for making specific pieces that you intend to keep. No pieces can by kiln-fired or picked up the next day. Please bring your own safety glasses and any tools that you might need when experiencing a new torch.

Las Vegas Tour and Mob Museum

Reservation deadline: March 5

Depart for a Las Vegas City tour as we drive down the strip to Fremont Street to see the sights of Vegas. You will hear all about Las Vegas hotels and insider Vegas stories. Las Vegas has approximately 150,000 hotel rooms and in 2016, over 6,310,616 convention delegates visited during the 21,864 conventions that were held in Vegas!

Your next stop is The Mob Museum which provides a world-class, interactive journey through true stories. From the birth of the Mob, to today’s headlines with shadows and whispers, you’ll learn about G-Men and Made Men. Enjoy your guided tour through the museum to learn about the history and future of crime. It’s fitting that the $42 million Mob Museum sits in the circa-1933 former federal courthouse and U.S. Post Office downtown; this is where the Kefauver Committee held one of its historic hearings on organized crime in 1950. Today the museum pays homage to Las Vegas’s criminal underbelly, explaining to visitors how the Mafia worked, who was involved, how the law brought down local mobsters, and what happened to gangsters once they were caught and incarcerated. Museum highlights include bricks from the wall of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929, and a mock-up of the electric chair that killed a number of mobsters (as well as spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg).

PRICE INCLUDES: Deluxe motor coach transportation; professional tour guide, Las Vegas driving tour, guided tour of the Mob Museum; all gratuities; all applicable taxes.

Karen van Staden, International PresenterMy Journey with Magic FloralsMy lampwork journey started with small beginnings in my kitchen, progressing to a studio, and finally transforming to a teaching studio in South Africa shortly after the 2016 ISGB Gathering. This journey has kept me sane through difficult times. It has taught me that I am not heading to a specific destination, and that I have no limits. And being a member of the ISGB, just helped me to become part of the bead family, to grow faster and share my passion for this wonderful art form.

On my journey, I have worked through many tutorials, exploring techniques in my quest to find my voice, my signature. One day I was working through a tutorial, I picked up the cane I learned to make, and then decided to make encased flowers with it, and everything changed. Ever since, I’ve been keeping the way I make my flowers in my floral beads secret, and I want to finally share my technique with you at the 2018 Gathering! My flowers are more life-like and adds that little extra pizazz and magic to a bead. This will change the way you make flowers in your beads forever!www.lampworx.co.za

Bead Swap and Closing Get Together

Enjoy this time to celebrate the end of another great conference. Before packing, stop by this final get together to show off and swap beads with one another. In the spirit of sharing, please bring your handmade beads you intend to swap and please remember that this time together is only about swapping, “oohing and ahhing,”and not about selling. Express your multifaceted self, let your creativity sparkle, come to swap, and leave with wonderful memories.

Third Annual Swap for Non-conference Attendees

If you aren’t able to get to the 2018 Gathering, you can avoid singing the “Sad to Miss the Gathering Blues” by signing up for the ISGB Bead Swap. This was a great success in 2017 and It promises to be even bigger in 2018!

Non-attendees are invited to join in the bead swap fun and esprit de corps by swapping beads with up to ten other members from around the world who also, sadly, cannot attend. This is a chance to develop the friendships and bonds that flow from open-hearted trading of beads.

Join the ISGB Facebook Gathering page and check out the file “SWAP FAQ” for all the details. The first 100 members to post in the “sign up” thread that will begin on January 9, 2018, are eligible to participate.

Heather Behrendt, Polly Toombs, and Filip Vogelpohl Rapid Fire Presentation – Marbles! What is a “Rapid Fire Presentation”? It is a chance to hear from three artists with contrasting and complementary work around a single style or idea. This year we have assembled three marble makers in both soft and borosilicate glass who will offer insights into their style of marble making and artistry. Heather Behrendt will present her two-sided marbles using soft glass and elaborate stringer embellishment. Dichroic glass in borosilicate marbles will be the topic of Polly Toombs. Finally, working larger and with more complexity will be addressed by Filip Vogelpohl.
