MEANING OF ISBD ISBD is a standard for descriptive

cataloguing that facilitates the exchange ofbibliographic records throughout the

international library and informationcommunity

It gives guidance to publishers on what

elements should be present in publishedworks

OBJECTIVES AND PRINCIPLES OF ISBD The ISBD provides consistent stipulations for

description of all types of published resources, to theextent that uniformity is possible, and specific

stipulations for specific types of resources as required

to describe those resources The ISBD provides the stipulations for compatibledescriptive cataloguing worldwide in order to aid the

international exchange of bibliographic records

between national bibliographic agencies andthroughout the international library and informationcommunity (including producers and publishers).

The ISBD accommodates different levelsof description, including those needed bynational bibliographic agencies, national

bibliographies, universities and otherresearch collections.

The set of elements of information ratherthan the display or use of those elementsin a specific automated system provides

the focus.

PURPOSE OF ISBD To provide the stipulations for compatible

descriptive cataloguing worldwide in order to aidthe international exchange of bibliographic

records between national bibliographic agencies

To make records from different sourcesinterchangeable, so that records produced in

one country can be easily accepted in librarycatalogues or other bibliographic lists in anyother country

To assist in the interpretation of recordsacross language barriers, so that recordsproduced for users of one language can

be interpreted by users of other languages

To assist in the conversion of bibliographicrecords to electronic form

To enhance interoperability with othercontent standards.

USE OF ISBD For improving the exchange of bibliographic

records worldwide

ISBD provides stipulations to cover the

maximum amount of descriptive informationthat may be required in a range of different

bibliographic activities.

ISBD description forms a part of a completebibliographic record and is not normally usedby itself

AREA 1 (TITLE AND STATEMENT OFRESPONSIBILITIES)

Title Includes the title proper, parallel titles, othertitle information, and statements of responsibility It contains the title which is can also be called

as the title proper A statement of responsibility consists of one or

more names, phrases, or groups of charactersrelating to the identification and/or function of

any persons or corporate bodies responsible for

or contributing to the creation or realization ofthe intellectual or artistic content of a work

contained in the resource described

AREA 2 (EDITION)Contains a statement about the version of

the information package represented in thereplacement record that has being created.

It might be a new edition of a work, a newversion of a software package or a version of

a work that is put out for a particular

geographic area.

AREA 3 MATERIAL/TYPES OF PUBLICATIONSPECIFIC DETAILS)

Contains data that are unique to a particularclass of material or type of resource.

It contains data that is particularly importantto a particular type of work.

AREA 4 (PUBLICATION, DISTRIBUTION, ETC)

Area 4 contains the name of the entity suchas publisher, institution, manufacturer and

other that is responsible for the presentation

and packaging of the information packagesas well as with its geographical location.

Used to record data connected with the

physical manufacture of the resource

AREA 5 (PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION) The physical description area includes thespecific material designation and extent, other

physical details, the dimensions, and theaccompanying material statement.

It contains a physical description of informationthat is in tangible form

includes the extent of the item given in terms ofwhat kind of item it is as well as the dimensions

of the item and ant other physical details suchas information about illustration or material from

which an object is made.

AREA 6 (SERIES) A series is a group of separate works that are

related in subject or form and/or published bythe same entity

A series title can have the same kinds ofadditional other than the series does the title

in Area 1

AREA 7 (NOTES) The note area contains any descriptiveinformation that has not been given in other

areas of the description but that is

considered to be important to users ofbibliographic records.

Notes qualify and amplify the description in

areas 1-6 and can deal with any aspect of aresource.

AREA 8 (STANDARD NUMBER AND TERMS OFAVAILABILITY)

A standard number is any number oralphanumeric designation associated with and

identifying a resource according to aninternational standard, such as an International

Standard Book Number or an InternationalStandard Serial Number

The area contains information about the termsof availability of the information packages for

example it is free to members but others mustpay or it is unavailable to the public for a certainnumber of years.
