The Bruno Kessler Foundation’s Center for Research on International Politics and Conflict Resolution (FBK-CERPIC) organizes a dissertation workshop on international studies each summer in Terzolas near Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. The three-day workshop brings together PhD students from across Europe and the rest of the world to present and refine their dissertation research, and to build connections with doctoral students from other universities.Graduate students will have the opportunity both to have their own research discussed, and to see and comment on what others are doing. Participants will emerge with stronger, more focused research proposals, and wider professional networks. The workshop precedes the annual two-day conference of the Standing Group International Relations of the Italian Political Science Association.

ObjectivesBackgroundThe summer school brings together students and experts from around the world, and is intended to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to share and improve upon their dissertation research in an international context. The goals of the workshop fall into two broad categories: improving dissertation research and building connections. ResearchParticipants are expected to have begun the research portion of their dissertation, and will benefit by sharing their work with others. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to improve upon their dissertation research by learning about the dissertation process from experts in the field, attending and commenting upon research presentations from other students, and receiving advice, feedback, and constructive criticism on their own ideas. The diversity of backgrounds, interests, and training of the attendees ensures that participants will receive input from numerous alternative perspectives, allowing them to investigate approaches they might never have considered otherwise. ConnectionsThe summer school brings together a broad group of students, pursuing PhDs in several different countries, as well as a list of internationally-renowned experts working in Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. Participants will have the opportunity to build lasting connections with others working on similar topics, in universities across the world, and to receive mentorship from some of the leading minds in international relations research. This brings with it the opportunity to build strong, international networks, with the potential to bring about fruitful collaborations in the future.

The workshop will be held in the Terzolas Convent - in the small town of Terzolas. The Terzolas Convent was built in 1894 in the lower part of Val di Sole (Sun Valley), near the small village of Malé, at an elevation of 755m above sea level. Enclosed within the convent’s strong walls are a Church, a small chapel, and the monks’ houses. This historical residence is located on a promontory with a beautiful panoramic view, in a quiet, sunny area.

Nathan MunierUniversity of Nebraska-LincolnDomestic political economy and the regulation of conflict diamondsNathan Munier is a doctoral candidate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Currently, his research is in the area of international political economy, specifically state responses to international agreements. The central question that guides his research is: why do some states have higher levels of compliance and cooperation with the Kimberley Process diamond certification regime, than others? He develops a domestic political economy approach, both to answer this specific question and to understand better compliance and cooperation with international regimes more generally. He contends that state responses to international regimes are part of a domestic decision making process in which the preferences of private economic actors, often conflicting, account for much of the variation in state level compliance and the form that international regimes take. To test this theory, he examines in depth four diamond wealthy countries: Angola, Namibia, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. His findings show that the more dependent states are on private actors in the diamond industry, the more these preferences are reflected in policy decisions. He will use this research to better understand how resource dependence, powerful economic actors and geography influence state responses to international agreements.
