Hello and welcome to the firstissue of the international VIXEN& BUBBLE Fanzine. I thought itwas time to do something likethis to put all the fans out theretogether.

Well talking about the fans.I’m a VIXEN-Fan since late 1988.Most of you know that I’m arecord collector and this is one ofthe reasons I became a VIXEN-Fans. As a record collector youhave to go out every month tocheck all the record stores nearyour hometown. It was inNovember 1988 when myfriend and I went to one of thebiggest record stores inDuesseldorf. When we went inI saw a big poster on the wallwhich shows VIXEN. I thought„Ah another Female Band like theRunaways, looking good lets trythe record and listen if the canplay or if the only look fantastic.I bought the record (for all therecord collectors, it was thelimited edition with Charmed lifeon side two - this is now a rareand expensive record). I alsobought the audio-tape. Backhome I put the record on and itwas great. I loved every song onthe record. But as most of all thepeople who first listen to therecord I couldn’t believe that theyplayed all this stuff (sorry Share,Jan, Janet and Roxy). But thisopinion was only for one month. In January 1989 I went to aconcert in Duesseldorf. This was also shown by GermanTelevision (RTL - Mosh). And aseveryone who saw VIXEN live Ilearned something. Yes the reallyplay great Rock’n’Roll. That wasthe day I became a real and loyal

VIXEN-Fan. From that day Istarted to collect everything. From cuttings, photos, merchan-dise to records, CD’s, audio- andvideo-stuff. Everything wasimportant to me. Now I’m veryproud of my collection whichcontains over 80 LP’s, over 100Singles, more than 70 CD’s andover 40 hours of video-stuff. Anamazing collection of cuttingsfrom around the world plus over1.000 different photos of theband. I’m also very proud to saythat I have also 5 Gold Awardof the first VIXEN-album (thanksto my friend SAM).

In 1993 I had the change to metShare in L.A. when she playedwith Havanna 3AM. But I musttell you the truth - I was to shyto talk to her - so I hope I’ll getanother change (Give me anotherchange, Share - I know you’llread this).

This was my little story - there’s alot more to tell you but I thing it’stime to start with the fanzine. Ifyou like to write your personalstory send it in with a photo ofyourself and I’ll be happy to printit in the next issue. Also concertreview are very welcome.Your personal ad is also verywelcome and it’s for free!Anything you like to tell wouldbe important - remember thisfanzine is made for you -THE FANS. Hope you’ll like thefanzine - sorry for any mistakes,it’s really hard to write downeverything in English. Hope youcan understand everything. Before I start with the story ofVIXEN I’d like to give you a littleprofile of myself. Here it is…

STORY part oneThe story of VIXEN started wayback in 1980/1981, whenguitarist Jan Kuehnemundformed her first band and calledit VIXEN. Jan was born onNovember 18, 1961 in St. Paul,Minnesota. She started out fromMinnesota and played with herband all around the USA andfinally worked their way to LosAngeles. On their way touringacross the country, Jan saw agreat vocalist playing at a club inLos Angeles and this vocalist wasJanet Gardner.

Janet was born on March 17,1962 in Juneau, Alaska. Thevoice was perfect for VIXEN andso Jan ‘stole’ Janet for her band.

In 1984 the band got a chanceto play in a real movie. The moviewas called ‘Hardbodies’ and it’sabout making love at a beachand having parties all day. VIXENplays on those parties and theydo six tracks for the movie.

Janet Gardner in 1991 during their EuropeanTour with Deep Purple.

THE SONGS for the movie:

COMPUTER MADNESS(Jan Kuehnemund)

MARIA(Tamara Ivanov)

BE WITH ME(Gail Ericksen & Keith Krupp)

MR. COOL(Gail Ericksen)

GIVE IT A CHANCE(J. Gardner & J. Kuehnemund)

RUNNIN’(Cindy Boetticher)

The line-up of the band in themovie is:

Jan Kuehnemund (lead guitar),Janet Gardner (vocals),Tamara Ivanov (rhythm guitar)Pia Koko (bass) andLaurie Hedlund (drums).

If a soundtrack exists, pleasegive a note to me. I know anorder-no. but I haven’t got anyinformation yet.

In time the band went throughsome personal changes to getthe right ingredients for VIXEN.And it was only a few monthslater, when they saw a band

called MADAM X with a greatfemale drummer, named RoxyPetrucci. Her Sister Maxine whoplayed guitar in MADAM X isnow the bass-player for the newline-up of VIXEN. So both aretogether again. (A special aboutMADAM X will be in one of thenext issues including a niceposter plus Discography fromaround the world).

Back in 1984 when MADAM Xdid on LP called ‘We reservethe right’ and had some greatresponce over here in Europewith their single ‘High in highschool / Metal in my veins’,both produced by Rick Derringer. After hearing MADAM X weresplitting up, VIXEN sent a demotape to Roxy Petrucci, who wasborn on March 17, 1962 in Rochester, Michigan. She did afew jam sessions with the bandand very shortly became the newdrummer of VIXEN. The band(now a four-piece with Jan, JanetRoxy and on bass, Steve Vai’swife Pia Koko) got picked up byLeft Bank Management and theymade a three-track demo.

Tracks on the demo were:LEAVE ME ALONE,WAITING FOR YOUandYOU OUGHTA KNOW BY NOW.

This is the end of part one.Part two will be in issue two.If you have more informationplease let me know. Any infofor making a better story isimportant.

What kind of car do you drive?Mazda RX-7Most terrifying experience?Being caught in a hurricane in themiddle of the Bermuda Triangle in asmall sail boat with no radio. It lastedabout 10 hours.Happiest experience?Right before we went on stage atone of the first shows with theScorpions. We were in Stockholmand it was the biggest crowd wehad ever played to and right whenthe lights went down, the crowd letout with a huge roar. At that point Ireally felt like my dreams werecoming true.

Most embarrassing moment? There have been a couple on stage. One was when we toured with theScorpions. I ran to Jan’s side of thestage during on of the songs and Idon’t know what happened, but allof a sudden I was flying through theair. Somehow I caught myself, landed and sort of rolled. I ended upon my back without hurting myselfand I didn’t miss a note. I just laidthere and laughed for a while. What do you like to do forrecreation or relaxation?I like to read mysteries or go forwalk. If there’s a party and oneof us wants to go, we can usuallyget Roxy to go. Jan is real quiet. Iknow it’s an over used word, butnice applies to Jan. She also has anunexpectedness about her thatcomes out in her guitar playing.Janet is really cool to work with. She’s very diplomatic and need I sayit. … a great singer! But then, this is agreat band! How would you describe yourself?I’m very passionate about what I do.I have a tendency to go to extremesand I’ve been told I’m oversensitive, but I love to laugh and I enjoy life! What kind of upbringing did youhave? It was a very normal and typicalMidwestern lifestyle. We went tochurch every Sunday. I got good gra-des in school and was involved insports. One thing I am thankful for -my parents always told me theywould love me no matter what Idid and that I could be anythingI wanted to be.How would your former classmatesdescribe you?Always late for school. What was your favorite subject inschool?Besides music, I really loved Mathand English. I liked Math because itwas real logical and I’m a logical per-son. That’s why I like mysteriesbecause I enjoy figuring them out.I’ve always been attracted to Englishbecause I love writing and reading. What kind of jobs did you havebefore you became successful withyour music?I spent a lot of time doing things asa bass player that I considered jobs. I

taught at BIT, Bass Institute ofTechnology. I still teach there doingopen counseling. Believe it or not, Iused to play bass for Helen Reddy. Ihad a few weird jobs too. For a whileI was a reader for a blind man whoworked in a government office inMinneapolis. I would open his mailand read it to him and be his eyes. That was pretty interesting and itgave me an appreciation for eyesight. What is your unrealized ambition?Dancing. I pursued it a little bitbut being a musician was moreimportant to me. And then my backoperations put a complete stop toany dancing dreams, but I admirethe talent in other people. What kind of music do you enjoylistening to?Hard rock, straight ahead jazz andblues. What was the first concert youattended?Black Oak Arkansas. What was the first record youbought?Jungle Book Story. My baby-sitterbroke it and I made her buy me anew one. The record I bought afterthat was Sugar Sugar by the Archies.Who is your favorite bassist?

Jaco Pastorius is heads aboveeveryone else for me. Some otherones would be Will Lee from theDavid Letterman Show, BillySheehan and Sting.Who are some of your favoritebands?ZZ Top, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, VanHalen, Count Basie, Stevie RayVaughan and the Police. What are your favorite albums?I can’t name just one so… AerosmithPump, Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop andMiles Davis King of blue. When did you become interested inmusic? When I was four. What sparked mewas primarily my mom’s pianoplaying. When she started givingpiano lessons, she offered them toall the kids in the family but I wasthe only one who really took to itand I pickes it up really fast.Everyone on her side of the familywas musical. They would come overto our house under the title of afamily gathering, but it was really ajam session. Everybody playedsomething and sang. I was singingharmonies by the time I was seven.Music represented joy to me andwas associated with love, warmthand being close to people. What kind of musical training didyou have?

I studied piano for 10 years. I tooklessons from my mom and someother classical teachers. I washeading toward a concert pianiststyle of playing. When I first got abass, I learned the notes out of abass book and learned songs byplaying with records by Aerosmithand the Rolling Stones. The musicdirector at school pulled me asideand said ‘You really have a naturaltalent for this and I think you mightbe interested in a school called theBerklee College of Music.’ He knew Ireally loved jazz and Berklee reallyspecializes in jazz training. I wentthere between my junior and senioryears of high school and it changedmy life. That was where I found outabout Jaco Pastorius and I sold myfretted bass and bought a fretless. When I went back to high school, Ipretty much dropped all my subjectsand started practicing eight hours aday. I dropped out of high schoolwith only six months left becauseI didn’t want to waste my timestudying anything but music. I wenton the road with a band to earnmoney to go back to Berklee. When Igot out of Berklee, I moved back toMinnesota and into Minneapolis tostart earning money as a jazz bassplayer. What is your history as a musician?

In Minneapolis I became known asa jazz bassist. I played weird avant-garde jazz, boring dinner stuff andbig band music which was really funto earn money. I did that for a fewyears and started working my wayback to rock music and playing morefunk. Then I had my back surgeryand that made me decide it wastime to move to Los Angeles.I realized that life is short and youdon’t know what’s going to happen. So I decided it was time to go for it,move to LA and either sink orswim. When I moved to LA I startedworking as a rock bassist. I wasdoing the same thing in LA as I wasin Minneapolis which was if a bandneeded a bass player to showcasefor a record company, they wouldhire me. I’d learn their songs duringthe week and go play with themwith no commitments or anything. Igot real tired of that after a whileand that was when I started lookingto join a band. I had met Jan at oneof those gigs and she gave me herphone number. So I called her upone day because I thought I couldget in on the scene through themnot knowing that the day I called herthey had decided they needed anew bass player. It was my lucky day. What was the first original song youever wrote? It was called ‘Chinese Disneyland.’ Iwrote it on this mondo Wurlitzerorgan that my mom had when I waseight years old. My mom still has arecording of it.Message for the fans:Always believe in yourself. Go foryour dreams and don’t let anybodyhold you back. Anything is possible.

Bubble is:Share: guitar and vocalsBam: drumsAlex: guitarBrian: bass

Share (a.k.a. Bunni) is married to the drummer for the band… Bam. You always knowBam from Britain’s Sleezy Band „Dogs d’amour“. One of my favourite bands too. He alsoplayed with the „Wildhearts“. Share is now playing guitar and is the singer of the band.Where is your bass? Talking about the bass, it’s Brian who plays bass for the band. Some of you will know him from „Dirty Looks“. Alex on guitar makes this bandcomplete. He played in such great bands like „Enuff Znuff“ and „Life, Sex & Death“.He also played on the soloalbum of Spike (Leadsinger of the Quireboys). They make awonderful sleezy, glitter, glam-rock! I really like it very much. It’s pur Rock’n’Roll with noKeyboard. No Keyboards no problems!

There’s a great T-Shirt available: black t-shirt with silver glitter BUBBLE Logo.
