Este probable- mente es el primer libro de texto escrito acerca de la ciencia de las malezas tropicales, con ejemplos de malezas :. cultivos tropicales. La importancia est6 en el estudio de malezas y su efecto sobre 10s cultivos. Weeding of paddies i n West Africa and catalogue of the main weeds was prepared o r i g i n a l l y i n French by the Crop Protect ion Division of IFAT, France and published i n conjunction with WARDA (West Africa Rice Development Association) i n Liberia. An English version is now ava i lab le consis t ing of 93 pages. It g ives general p r i n c i p l e s of weed cont ro l , descr ipt ion of t h e main candidate herbicides and p r a c t i c a l guidance on t h e i r app l ica t ion including t h e use of CDA. There a r e lists of the major weeds a f f e c t i n g r i c e i n West Africa and i l l u s t r a t i o n s of t h e more important ones. D r . I. Okezie Akobundu is a weed s c i e n t i s t a t the Internat ional I n s t i t u t e of Tropical Agriculture i n Ibadan, Nigeria where he guides the weed research and t ra in ing program. He received h i s M.S. from t h e University of Ca l i fo rn ia a t Davis and Ph.D. from Oregon S t a t e University. A year of Post doctorate study followed a t Cornell University. D r . Akobundu served a s Secretary of t h e Weed Science Society of Nigeria i n 1974 and 1975 and a s PresiZent i n 1976 t o 1978. In 1978 he was e lec ted a s the f i r s t President of the newly formed West African Weed Science Society. D r . Akobundu is a char te r member of IWSS and is a l s o a member of the Weed Science Society of America and the European Weed Research Society. In 1978 he was instrumental i n organizing an in te rna t iona l conference on weed problems and control i n t h e humid and sub- humid t rop ics .

D r . S h w i c h i Matsunaka is a weed s c i e n t i s t i n the Faculty of Agriculture a t Kube University i n Japan. He received undergraduate and graduate t r a i n i n g a t Osaka University i n Japan. He received h i s Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo i n 1961. One year was spent as a v i s i t i n g s c i e n t i s t a t Dartmouth Medical School, USA. From 1965 t o 1977 D r . Matsunaka served a s Chief of t h e 6th Laboratory of Plant Physiology (Herbicides i n Japan. He has wr i t t en many books and papers on s e l e c t i v i t y , mechanism of ac t ion , and metabolism of herbicides. He has served as Secretary f o r Overseas Affairs,+-he Weed Science Society of Japan and Member of t h e E d i t o r i a l Board of "Weed Research (Tokyo)"; Executive Committee Member, ?-he Pes t ic ide Science Society of Japan and Member of t h e Edi to r ia l Board of "Journal 'of Pes t ic ide Science"; Member of t h e Edi- t o r i a l Board o f - " P l a n t and Cel l Physiology"; Executive Committee Member of the Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society (Secretary General, t h e Organizing Conunittee of t h e 5th Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society Confer- ence i n Tokyo i n 1975); Member of the Herbicide-Evaluation Committee of the Japan Association f o r t h e Advancement of PhytoRegulators (JAPR).
