Prison bead pays P r i s o n e r s a c r o s s the country won

a b i g v i c t o r y as a f e d e r a l judge ordered the head of V i r g i n i a ' s p r i s o n system Feb. 1 to pay p e r s o n a l l y more than $21,000 to three former p r i s o n e r s as compensation f o r " c r U e l and unusual punishment" they r e c e i v e d i n the s t a t e p e n i t e n t i a r y i n Richmond.

Irish protest Heath About 50 supporters of I r i s h

Heath was speaking a t a P r e s s Club luncheon. The p r o t e s t began around 11:00 a.m. w i t h a p i c k e t l i n e . Many banners and s i g n s were d i s p l a y e d .

L a t e r p r o t e s t o r s moved c l o s e r to the P r e s s B u i l d i n g to confront Heath as he was l e a v i n g . Although they were pushed back by p o l i c e , people waved I r i s h f l a g s and l o u d l y demanded an end to B r i t i s h i m p e r i a l ­ism i n I r e l a n d .

Heath ducked i n t o h i s l i m o s i n e and ignomiously made a U-turn to avoid the now combative crowd. One person was a r r e s t e d .

Cops beat teacher

A b l a c k D.C. p u b l i c school teacher has charged t h a t he was beaten by a group of white off-duty D.C. cops i n a downtown bar Jan. 28.

The o f f - d u t y cops f i r s t h u r l e d r a c i a l i n s u l t s a t the t e a c h e r , then two of the cops began h i t t i n g the teacher i n a parking l o t o u t s i d e the bar. A f t e r s e v e r a l other of the o f f -duty Cops began to j o i n i n , the teacher escaped by running down 13th s t r e e t . The D.C. cops say they are i n v e s t i g a t i n g the a t t a c k .

Students hit fee hike Georgetown U n i v e r s i t y students

p r o t e s t e d t u i t i o n and other fee i n ­c r e a s e s by dumping about 6,000 lemons outs i d e the door where the board of d i r e c t o r s of the s c h o o l were meeting to approve the i n c r e a s e s Jan. 30.

The lemons were s o l d f o r between a n i c k e l and a dime to students and the money went i n t o a s c h o l a r s h i p fund. The a c t i o n was a l s o d i r e c t e d a g a i n s t the Nixon a d m i n i s t r a t i o n whose budget cu t s i n the f i e l d of ed­u c a t i o n mean t u i t i o n i n c r e a s e s a c r o s s the country, according to s e v e r a l s t u d e n t s .

Only 86 c a s e s ever made i t i n t o the c o u r t s and l e s s than a h a l f dozen cops were a c t u a l l y con­v i c t e d .

at Freedmen's H o s p i t a l staged a work slow-down Feb. 1 over i s s u e s of p a t i e n t c a r e and c o n t r a c t terms.

Law school boycotted D e s p i t e a temporary r e s t r a i n i n g

The r u l i n g overturned a lower court d e c i s i o n that s a i d the gov­ernment was l i a b l e f o r damages done to Melvin C a r t e r , a D.C. man, who was beaten by a cop with b r a s s knuckles i n 1968.

Embassy law limited The U.S. Court of Appeals has

r u l e d t h a t i t i s l e g a l f o r someone to v e r b a l l y p r o t e s t w i t h i n 500 f e e t of an embassy, provided no f l a g s , banners, s i g n s or s i m i l a r d e v i c e s a r e d i s p l a y e d . The r u l i n g appears to wipe out the cop's p r a c t i c e of banning demonstrations w i t h i n 500 f e e t of an embassy as a matter of course.
