EFFECT ON LIBRARIES

Page 16: Internet and Email in Libraries

The Virtual Library is a collection of full text e-books, journals

and databases from various publishers and sources

which can be accessed by remote users at any time from any internet connected computer,

laptop or other portable device.

Development of Virtual Library

Page 17: Internet and Email in Libraries

Supplement to Libraries’ CollectionsInternet is considered as a supplement to

collections of libraries, in a way … as a substitute for databases on CD-ROMs

(such as accessing online databases), and a way of saving on subscription charges for

printed journals (accessing online journals),

But INTERNET is NOT a REPLACEMENT for printed books.

Page 18: Internet and Email in Libraries

Administrative Effects

Internet’s main administrative effect is on.. staff’s satisfaction, motives, speed and ease of services, users’ satisfaction, and turnouts, But it has the LEAST EFFECT ON

LIBRARIES’ BUDGETS.

Page 19: Internet and Email in Libraries

Qualities of Librarian

Internet Technology has replaced the traditional work.

So, competency requirements for the librarians are also changed.

Page 20: Internet and Email in Libraries

Qualities of Librarian Now, Librarians should have…–to master information technology –deep knowledge in their field (not only

librarianship) –good interpersonal skills –knowledge of the basics of marketing –public relations to successfully sell

library services.

Page 21: Internet and Email in Libraries

User training The importance of user training is

increase even more, to help them –to navigate in the onrush of

traditional and electronic media, –to develop new search strategies

–create personal databases, etc.

Page 22: Internet and Email in Libraries

The Internet is being heavily used for performing various library functions such as reference work, classification and cataloguing, document delivery service, subscription to online journals, etc.

ICT has brought change in library objectives; libraries have become the intermediators of information, the focus of the work has shifted from collections to information services.
