De meest bekende toepassing van Internet of Things is de slimme meter, zoals Toon van Eneco, Anna van Nieuwe Energie Maatschappij of Nest van Google. Wie heeft er al een slimme meter? Merk je het in je energieverbruik? Onderzoek van KEMA, in opdracht van de overheid, wijst uit dat directe feedback op je energieverbruik, leidt tot 5 tot 6,5% minder energieverbruik. Zowel Enexis als Alliander hebben hun meters slim gemaakt met de simkaarten van het KPN netwerk. O.b.v. analyse van de data kunnen ze de vraag naar en aanbod van energie beter afstemmen waardoor ze efficiënter hun schone energiebronnen in kunnen kopen.
