A few facts & figures

• Independent company within the Croda Group• 5 manufacturing sites around the globe• Around 1,000 employees• Present in over 50 countries – and growing• Sales in excess of 500 million Euros• Global headquarters in Gouda, The Netherlands• Manufacturing around 650,000 tonnes of oleochemicals and their

derivatives every year• Over 150 years of experience in the oleochemical industry

has resulted in in-depth product, application & regulatory knowledge

Per 2008, April 1, Uniqema will continue under the name CRODA

Oleochemicals

• Oleochemicals are products derived from the renewable resources of vegetable and animal oils and fats

• They are often a sustainable alternative to petrochemicals, based on finite resources like coal, crude oil and gas

• Ca. 10% of global oils & fats are being used in chemical applications

• The main oleochemical raw materials are by-products from the food industry– cows are grown for meat and milk, not for tallow– palm trees are grown for palm oil, not for the palm kernels

Oil or Fat = Glycerol + Fatty acids

Variations in natural oils and fats come from changes in the fatty acids:

Characteristics Oleochemicals

• Raw materials– Natural/renewable– Readily available– Interchangeable– Well defined

• Processes– Diverse– Mild conditions– Product flow balances

• Products– Extensive range– Non toxic– Biodegradable– Tailor-made

Global oleochemicals market

• Several basic derivatives still dominate :

– Fatty acids ; for detergents, surfactants, lubricant, decorative coatings, rubber and cosmetic esters etc.

– Fatty alcohols ; for detergents, surfactants– Glycerine ; many and diverse uses (growing !)– Methyl esters ; for biodiesel, surfactants, fatty alcohols (as

intermediate)– Soaps ; for soap bars, detergents– Candles

Global oleochemicals market

• Increasingly high value derivatives are being developed:

– Specialty ester for personal care (eg. emollients)– Biodegradable esters for heavy duty lubricant applications– Friction modifiers (amides, esters) for automotive

lubricants to reduce energy consumption– Dimer f.a. based building blocks for new polymer

applications (coatings, adhesives, elastomers, foams)– Polymeric plasticisers for PVC

Uniqema’s offer – why do customers buy these esters?

• Benefits of Uniqema’s oleochemical esters to Bio-hydraulic oils:– Biodegradability (License to operate)– >80% based on renewable resources (License to operate)– Excellent oxidative stability (longer life)– Better low temperature properties (reliability under all

conditions)– Better wear performance in FZG test – longer pump life & less

downtime (lower operational costs)

• Other application area’s include chain saw oils, Grease, Mould release, Universal Tractor Oils (UTTO), 2T engineOils, Windmill gear oils, turbine oils

Summary

• Coatings• Adhesives• Detergents• Elastomers• Fine chemicals

Oleochemicals and their derivatives have served as building blocks and effect chemicals in hundreds of consumer and industrial applications for many, many years already:

• Foams• Lubricants• Paper• Personal care • Rubberand many more…

Why did our customers select oleochemicals?1. Performance / unique properties2. Safety, Health & Environmental considerations
