Education: He received his early education from scholars of his hometown, where he showed mastery in

theological debates.Bediuzzaman himself studied and mastered almost all the physical and

mathematical sciences, and later studied philosophy, for he believed that it was only in this way that Islamic theology (kalâm) could be renewed and successfully answer the attacks to

which the Qur’an and Islam were then subject.

Muhammad Hamidullah, D. Phil., D. Litt., HI, was a Muhaddith, Faqih, scholar of Islamic

law and an academic author with over 250 books. A prolific writer, his extensive works on

Islamic science, history and culture have been published in several languages and many

thousands of articles in learned journals.

Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah was a prolific author whose imposing life in the field of writing was characteristically distinguished from other personalities and who devoted his life to

religious and academic works and inspired many scholars for serving the cause of Islam. In

modern times, it is also surprising enough for every scholar who observes the circumstances

in which Dr. Hamidullah lived on one hand and the large number of valuable works produced by him about different subjects on the other hand with high academic standards. He has

almost covered the whole range of Islamic studies in his writings and tried to explore true

picture of Islam and its fundamental sciences. Although the dimensions of his works spread over all these spheres- theology, the holy Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Islamic History and culture,

ethics, politics, economics but hadith, Fiqh, Sirah and Islamic History were his favorite

subjects.

Ahmad Ibrahim

Born: 15 Mei 1916, Singapura

Education:

Ahmad was educated in Victoria Bridge School (now Victoria School), Raffles Institution,

and Raffles College (now the National University of Singapore). In 1936, he received the Queen's Scholarship (now known as the President's Scholarship) to study in St John's College,

University of Cambridge. He graduated in 1939 with 1st Class Economics Tripos I and 1st

Class Law Tripos II, then attained the Masters in Law in 1965. He was awarded the Honorary

Degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D) from the University of Singapore on 5 June 1965.

16 Sep 1946: Admitted to the Bar in Singapore.

1947: Appointed district judge. 1948: Leaves civil service and becomes a law lecturer at Raffles College.

1949–55: In private practice and serves as municipal commissioner, also a member of the

1955: Returns to civil service and appointed district judge. 1956: Made crown counsel and deputy public prosecutor.

May 1957: Promoted to senior crown counsel.

1959–1965: Singapore’s first state advocate general. 1965–1967: The Republic of Singapore’s first attorney-general.

1966: Parliament passes the Administration of Muslim Law Bill drafted by Ahmad. Under

the new law, the Syariah Court’s jurisdiction is revamped and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore established.

1969: Resigns from the public sector in Singapore after 22 years of service and relocates to

Malaysia.

1969–1972: Professor of Law Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, University of Malaya.

1972–1983: Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Malaya.

1983–1999: Professor and Shaikh Kulliyah Undang-Undang, International Islamic University, Malaysia.

1984: Professor Emeritus, University of Malaya.

Taha Jabir Al-Alwani

Born: 1935, Iraq

Education: Al-Alwani received his high school diploma from Al-Azhar in 1953 and received his

bachelor's from the College of Shari’ah and Law at al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt in

1959. He continued at the college and earned a master's degree in 1968 and a doctorate in

Usul al-fiqh in 1973.

Workspace:

He was president of GSISS and occupied the Imam Al-Shafi’i Chair in Islamic Legal Theory. Dr. Alalwani was also president of the International Institute of Islamic Thought in Herndon,

VA and president of the Fiqh Council of North America. He taught Islamic legal theory for eleven years at various universities in the Muslim world.

He was particularly interested in the social implications of Islamic law and was a major

participant in the activities of Muslim social scientists and had been a regular contributor to

the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences.
