What is CWE? Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) is an applied academic program
in which students receive transferable credit for what they learn while working.
All districts must have a ‘District Plan’ for CWE approved by the CCCCO. Two types of CWE: General and Occupational
General has broader learning objectives Occupational is focused on skills related to the academic/occupational area
The District provides Worker’s Compensation for Unpaid CWE experiences
Students can earn a total of 16 units of CWE with a maximum of 8 units in one semester
What is CWE? (continued)
Units are awarded based on the achievement of specific, measurable, college-level learning objectives
CA Ed Code, Title 5, section 55254 defines CWE ‘Learning’ as: New or expanded responsibilities
or Learning opportunities beyond those experienced during previous
employment and…
The experience contributes to their occupational or educational goals.

CWE can be ‘PAID’ or ‘UNPAID’ UNPAID experiences must meet the DOL’s 6 criteria test:
Similar to training given in an educational environment Benefit of the intern Does not displace regular employees Not entitled to a job at completion Employer & intern understand the intern is not entitled to
wages during the internship

Recent changes to Title V pertaining to CWE Alternatives to an ‘In-Person’ visit:• The Worksite is hosted by a reliable entity with a strong
track record• The student and supervisor are repeating Work Experience
and all parties are already known• Emergency and security of instructor, supervisor, or student• Work hours of student or supervisor do not match
instructor’s• Student and supervisor are working in virtual offices• Distance
