What is Autism?

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. Its symptoms include differences and disabilities in many areas including social communication skills, fine and gross motor skills, and sometimes intellectual skills. This study focused on the interpersonal skills of a child with Asperger Syndrome (Autism).

What is Asperger Syndrome?

Asperger's syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to socialize and communicate effectively with others. Children with Asperger's syndrome typically exhibit social awkwardness and an all-absorbing interest in specific topics.

What is Interpersonal skills?

Interpersonal skills include not only how we communicate with others, but also our confidence and our ability to listen and understand on the message other people are sending – be it verbally or through gestures and body language.

Rationale

Autism is a category in Special Education that has

limited source of information, specifically the interpersonal skills of these individuals, which is very much essential to people responsible and concern to this people.

By these means the researchers wanted to acquire more vital information with regards to this matter.

This study aims to give people enough understanding on the behavior of a child with Asperger Syndrome, specifically their interpersonal skills. This awareness will provide those strategies on how to deal and cope with them. In the same aspect the researchers want to find out the interaction of a certain child on school setting with specific type of people.

The major purpose of this case study is to know the interpersonal skills of the pupil with Asperger Syndrome (Autism), a pupil of SogodSpEdCenter.

Specifically this case study sought to answer to the question:1. How does the child with Asperger Syndrome interact with?

Significance of the Study

The result of this study would provide the knowledge on the interpersonal skills

state of the pupil having Asperger Syndrome (Autism) and would help the teachers and parents to understand and cope up with the behavior of a child with Asperger Syndrome.Specifically, this study is deemed beneficial to the following:

Parents. This would give comprehensive information on the current state of the interpersonal skills of the pupil for them to know or understand the behavior or how the child interact or respond to a situation.

Teachers. This research would help the teachers to discover and understand better the status of their pupil with Asperger Syndrome (Autism). It will be used in enhancing the interpersonal skills of a child with Asperger Syndrome (Autism) in the inclusion within the general education program.

SpEd Majors. This study is helpful to the would-be teachers who are specializing Special Education as this would provide them some information that are relevant and significant in their future career.

Methodology

Research DesignThis case study utilized the single case study method using the standardized checklist, anecdotal recording and video recording as a tool in gathering data and focusing in a child with Asperger Syndrome (Autism). The single case study will be employed because being a case study, it enables the researchers to study the variables pertinent to the specific situation/case discussed where the respondents situation was explored through observations following the research instruments.

Research RespondentThe research respondent of this study is Alex(pseudonym-for confidentiality purposes) a 8 year-old pupil

with Asperger Syndrome (Autism) who is currently residing at 730 Bagares St., Zone 5, Sogod, Southern Leyte and grade III at SogodSpEd Center, Sogod, Southern Leyte.

Research InstrumentThe research will usemodifiedchecklist, anecdotal recording and video recordingto collect the data

needed in the study. For the checklist, the first part will answer the needed information on the profile of the pupil. The second section determined the interpersonal skills of the pupil as observed by the researchers.For anecdotal recording sheet it will be used to document the child’s behavior, significant incidents or specific, observable behaviors can be recorded by the teacher (http://www.saskschool.com). For video recording, it will be used to record and to capture the behavior of the child with Asperger Syndrome.
