Why?

This topic will develop the children’s understanding of the diverse range of animals that exist in our world. We will look at the habitats they live in and also conservation and environmental work that goes on to protect endangered species.

Eco schools

We will be looking at ways in which we can protect the environment and illegal activities such as poaching and the ivory trade.

British values

We will continue to underpin our learning through the promotion of British Values in the following ways: Democracy The children will decide which habitats we want to find out about. The Rule of Law We will discuss what rules we have to protect animals from harm. Individual Liberty Children will have the opportunity to choose how to present their work with their home learning projects. Mutual respect Children will learn about how different countries work together to protect animals and the environment.

Rights Respecting Schools

As a Right’s Respecting School we will consider the following rights in this topic; Article 12: Every child has a right to have their voices heard. Article 17: Every child has a right to access correct information.

Class: Scorpions Term: Summer 2

Brilliant Beginning

The children were told about their new theme before half term. The children will complete an animal quiz to see what they know already.

Fabulous Finish

The children will take a trip to Longleat and use their understanding of animals to answer questions.

Sparkling Starter

The children will complete an animal CSI activity, where they have to piece together evidence to find out what happened to an animal in their habitat.

Connect Be Self aware Be Determined Reflect Question Wonder

We will connect what we already know about animals to work on conservation work.

We will consider what skills we have to help us with group work and what targets we may have.

We will be determined in all we do, including writing about animals in zoos.

We will reflect on our learning and see any growing green marking as a positive step towards success.

We will ask questions about what we can do to support the environment.

We will wonder what it might be like to live in a particular habitat on earth.

As Geographers, we will look at different habitats around the world and investigate climate, terrain and geographical features. We will look at climate change and how this is affecting our planet.

Geography As Historians, we are will look at famous explorers such as Edmund Hillary, David Livingstone and Ernest Shackleton and write from their points of view.

History

As mathematicians, we will be continuing our Inspire Maths work by focusing on division, problem solving and collecting and presenting data. We will continue to develop our counting skills and securing our understanding of times tables up to 12 x 12. We will find factors and multiples of numbers and use mathematical language to find numbers.

Maths

As musicians we will learn about music from different continents around the world.

Music We will be looking at striking and fielding and participate in rounders and cricket. We will develop our skills and use these within game settings. We will also be taking part in our school Sports Day.

PE

As Theologists, we will look at creation stories and how different religions and cultural groups believe the world came to be. We will show what we have learnt through a range of ways including art, music, poetry and writing.

RE As Scientists we will be exploring environmental issues including climate change and the impact this has. We will look at the causes of this and what we can do prevent it.

Science

English We will be investigating zoos and discussing whether animals should be kept in zoos and how well they support conservation. We will be writing poetry in a variety of styles and we will be reading ‘This Morning I met a Whale’ by Michael Morpurgo and writing in a variety of styles.

Computing We will collect information about different places in the world and present them using ICT.

Design Technology

As Designer Technologists we will learn about seasonality and how this affects what we grow. We will use a range of skills to cook seasonal dishes.

Art & Design

We will look at artwork that uses animals and the environment. We will look at the work of Andy Goldsworthy and recreate the picture ‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ by Henri Rousseau.

Children will research an animal and present information about it in a variety of ways. Children will comment on its habitat, how endangered it is and what threats they face.
