PARISH COUNCIL REPORTMeeting held on Tuesday 4th March 2014Clerk's ReportNorth Witham Airfield - This year is

the 70th Anniversary of D-Day.

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire is

working with Grantham Museum to

put on an exhibition all about the

American Airborne Troops based in

and around Grantham. This

exhibition will run from end April to

end of July and will include North

Witham. SKDC are bringing out an

Aviation Trail which will include the

airfield at North Witham (Twyford

Wood). Should there be a

permanent memorial on the airfield

recognising the important role this

airfield played? The first American

paratroopers (Pioneer Groups of

the American Airborne Forces were

taken into battle by Dakotas from

this airfield dropping into Normandy

just after midnight on the morning of

6th June 1944. The clerk will

contact the American Embassy to

establish if the idea of a memorial

would be supported as a permanent

reminder of the American

involvement at RAF North Witham.

War Memorial - High Street, The

War Memorial Trust has confirmed

that they would consider an

application for financial support to

undertake a survey of the interior of

the war memorial in an attempt to

establish why the structure is

failing. Police report - PCSO Chris

Hughes provided a report on local

crime and will be published in the

“In Touch” magazine. Broadband

Speed - Response by parishioners

to provide the clerk with their

broadband speeds (March “In

Touch”) are being received and will

be published next month. BT will

be challenged to explain the vast

variation in speeds. Colster Way

Colster Way GreenThe Colster Way Green has been used by

children for many years for recreational

purposes. The Parish Council is considering

how this might be enhanced and would

welcome your input.

One idea is to try and raise funds for a

Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) – this is a

fenced hard surface arena for football/basket

ball similar to the one at Woolsthorpe Road

playing field.

The other idea is provide 1 metre high bow

top railings around the play section of the

green. This would improve safety from the

road and provide a dog free environment for

children to play. There would still be an area

for dog owners to exercise their pets

remembering of course that any fouling has

to be bagged and disposed in the correct

manner.

Please indicate below your view:

Kurling continues to thrive and last week we started our competition.

This is very light hearted and not meant to be taken too seriously. I am

sure, dear reader that you would like to know how I am progressing.

Well I'm not and was knocked put in the second round. I demanded a

replay but no one was listening! Anyway, good luck to those remaining.

Thank you to Bill Walsh for organising the competition.

Please note that there will not be any Kurling on Easter Monday.

On April 10th six of us are going to St.Barnabas Hospice, by kind

invitation of the Fundraising team. In January we donated the

proceeds of the Christmas Lunch raffle to St.Barnabas and from this

came the invitation to visit and see the new extension.

LUNCHEON CLUBOur next lunch is on March 26th. We are dining at The Royal Oak at

Swayfield. More on how we got on next time. However, if there is

anyone who would like to join us for lunch please get in touch with

June on 861400 you will be most welcome.

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATIONMARCH MEETING.16 members and one guest

thattended March meeting on 10 March.

Our speaker this month was Penny Vincent, who had spent two years living in Madeira, where her husband had ben recruited by an engineering company. As it is some years since they returned we were treated to a vivid picture of how life in the island was completely different from today. Madeira had yet to feature on the radar of the package holiday companies and the local people relied heavily on farming.

Penny recounted how in the early th15 Century a Portuguese ship was

driven onto the island of Porto Santo by a storm, and a few miles across the sea from Madeira itself. At first the sailors were terribly afraid of the dark hulking, wood covered island a short distance away. (Madeira means “wood” in Portuguese). When they plucked up enough courage to cross to the main island they found few suitable landing places, the steep wooded slopes reaching right down to the rocky shore. A fire was lit to clear an area where the sailors could build and start to colonise, but the wood was so closely packed that the whole island caught fire, and burned for several years; some say as many as 14 years elapsed before the last fires burned themselves out!

Madeira is well known for its wealth of plant life, Most of it non-native and much from the time when plant collectors returning to the U.K. with new plants used to harden plants off in `madeira before continuing on to the botanical gardens and collectors of Europe. We were shown numerous examples of the plants now found widely growing on the island, which

rises 1800 metres from the sea and boasts the second highest sea cliff in the world! This topography has given Madeira several different microclimates from definitely tropical at sea level, through a Mediterranean type of climate and even an English type, until reaching a foggy, moisture laden and cold top.

Mary Copley won the monthly competition with Jo taking second place.

A reminder that Gillian is hosting a thGarden Party on 26 July; if you

would like to come along please do so, whether or not you are a member of the club. All will be welcome. More details will be available nearer the time but a good day is guaranteed!

thOur next meeting is on 14 April at 7.30 when Andrew Parsons os coming to talk to us about farming with wildlife.ALL ARE WELCOME TO THIS AND ANY OF OUR MEETINGS, WHICH ARE HELD ON THE SECOND MONDAY OF THE MONTH IN THE VILLAGE HALL.

Letter from the Parochial Church Council

Dear ParishionerWe intended to write to every

household in Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe in response to a consultation paper on the future of the parish church, which some of you filled in last year, but it appears that we did not provide enough copies for every household, so we are reprinting part of it here. The survey showed that many of you see the church as an important feature of the village which should be preserved. To meet the running costs of the church and to pay our parish share, we need to raise over £16,000 a year. We can no longer meet these costs and we are therefore inviting you to contribute to these costs. You can do this either by making a one-off donation or by signing a standing order at your bank. You would then become a Friend of Colsterworth Church and be informed regularly about the church, its activities and plans, through the website, Quintet or In Touch. We have exciting plans for the church. We want to restore the vestry to its original purpose, which was a manorial chapel in the name of the Newton family. At the same time we plan to install new heating, toilets and basic catering facilities, which we hope will enable the church to serve the whole community more effectively. We shall be appealing to various charitable bodies for funds to achieve this.

If you feel able to help us, we would be delighted to hear from you. If you are a tax-payer and can make a gift-aided donation, we can reclaim an additional 25% from HM Revenue and Customs. Please contact any one of us mentioned below or write to The Rector, 13A Back Lane, Colsterworth, NG33 5NJ. We are also keen to increase the size and expertise of the Parochial Church Council and would love to hear from you if you would be interested in joining us or volunteering to help with the day-to-day running of the church.

With thanks and best wishes,The Rev. Eric Lomax 861959Simon Jowitt (church warden) 07903-390151Peter Smith (church warden) 860218Hazel Taylor (secretary) 860605Peter de Voil (treasurer) 860811

WOMEN'S INSTITUTEWhat a contrast to last month's meeting when we almost overflowed the seating, but it was a small and select group which attended the Annual General Meeting. We delayed the start of the meeting as our Adviser hadn't arrived, but it's a good job we decided to start without her, because she still hadn't arrived by the time we had finished. She was full of apologies when contacted later, and promised never to do it again!

Anyway, we did manage without her, and during the ordinary business of the meeting we heard more of the plans to transport the

Centenary Baton in June, we have another meeting next month but we do know that the venue to which we are invited is Belton House.

We heard all about the Spring Council Meeting which our delegate attended. County Federation have some interesting events lined up, one sounds very inviting if you are interested in Forensic Science. We have a chance to attend Lincoln University to see how criminals are caught with forensic evidence. There is a Swap Shop lunch, Independence Celebration in July, a Farm Tour, quizzes galore and even afternoon tea, and we have been invited to join Gonerby Hill Foot Institute members on a trip to Waddesdon Manor.

The Annual Meeting followed with the presentation of the competition Rose Bowl won this year (by a whisker) by Dot Williams with Trish Hart one point behind to take second place they also won gift vouchers. The usual business of an Annual Meeting with Committee

and Treasurer's Report, followed Mary Cowley deputising for Trish Hart the President thanked the committee for its hard work, Helen Scorror also thanked the retiring committee. A ballot was made for the Presidency which resulted in us getting a new one, Janet Bennett. The competition for a cup and saucer was won by Dot Williams. Refreshments (cake again) were served by Barbara Moore and Helen Scorror.

Next month's speaker is Mary Wright speaking on “Humble Remedies with Amazing Results”. Competition is A Bunch of Herbs. So if you care to join us at the

thSports and Social Club on April 15 at 2 o'clock you may hear something to your advantage, and of course you will be most welcome.

Tickets are still available for the Home Economics Group meeting in May.
