W.E. Castle discovered hairless rabbits (ff) in 1933. They would be

very useful in a microevolution

experiment.

Page 3: Intro Breeding Bunnies lab

Now if I had 50 bunnies that were carriers for hairless-ness (Ff), I

could put them in an isolated meadow in

England

Page 4: Intro Breeding Bunnies lab

Letting nature take its course…they would breed like bunnies. Any hairless

rabbits (ff) would not survive the cold winter…

thus being eliminated from the gene pool.

Page 5: Intro Breeding Bunnies lab

I would record each offspring produced each

generation. And, then use that data I could calculate

the changes in gene frequency

(microevolution) of the F allele and f allele.

Page 6: Intro Breeding Bunnies lab

OK…Now I just need a Grant to pay for the

research, convince my parents to let me go on

travel study, A passport….Hum, maybe I could come

up with a model experiment

I could use beans to represent the alleles of

each bunny“F” allele “f” allele

So…

• What would be the research question of this lab?

Page 18: Intro Breeding Bunnies lab

So…

• What do you predict will happen to the percentage of f (NO fur alleles) in the bunny population over 8 generations?– Why?

• What do you predict will happen to the percentage of F(fur alleles) in the bunny population over 8 generations?– Why?
