Civic Experience I was involved in handing out food and coats to the less fortunate
during Christmas time. This was one of the most heartbreaking and rewarding moments in my life because I was able to see that the less fortunate come in all different shapes and sizes, yet I saw how happy they were to receive the help.
I am also involved in a Facebook campaign started by Tiffani Blackmond from Cycle 29 Called Dear Black People. The purpose is to raise awareness on how black people are portrayed in the world and how we can take steps to change the perception. For more information on Dear Black People visit the Facebook page.
Low Wage Job Experience My low wage job after leaving home was at Saluki Central. I took
a break from school at SIUC ( Southern Illinois University Carbondale) and decided to work for a while. I received a job offer at a school apparel store called Saluki Central as a salesman/graphic designer. I was paid $6.25 an hour. I also worked as a flight attendant for GoJet Airlines. Although, I loved my job I was only getting paid around $500 every two weeks even though I was always at work.
Why? I wanted to be a part of i.c. stars because I was tired of being
expendable. I wanted to be able to have a career I enjoyed and that I knew would challenge me. I also wanted to be able to provide my family with financial stability. I was lucky enough to see a few alumni before and after taking part in the internship and the positive changes that occurred during the process.
