The Royal Proclamation of 1763
Made in England by the king
![Page 5: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Deals with all native populations in North
AmericaProclamation says that all lands were
to be held in reserve for natives
![Page 6: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Also says natives could only give their
land to the crown
![Page 7: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Point of contention
![Page 8: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Did the king recognize that land rights already
existedOr did he give those
rights to natives, which he could then take
away
![Page 9: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The British North America Act
Canada becomes a country
![Page 10: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
one very important line in the act
the federal government has the responsibility
to deal with indians
![Page 11: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
One of the first things they did was pass the Enfranchisement Act
...So indians couldn't vote, but if you became white
you could
![Page 12: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
One of the first things they did was pass the Enfranchisement Act
...and native women lost the right to vote on band matters
![Page 13: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
This was a big problem for the
IroquoisWomen there had great powers on council, they
elected chiefs
![Page 14: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Indian Act
or rather
![Page 15: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The Indian Acts
Of 1876 and 1951
![Page 16: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
One of the main concepts of the act
wasNative land was actually Crown
land
![Page 17: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The crown was looking after it for the
natives
And by crown, they meant the government
![Page 18: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Which restricted the sovereignty of natives
And by government, they meant white people
![Page 19: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
And by restricted we mean it was illegal for
natives to:• buy alcohol
• vote
• sell their land
• leave the reserve without permission
• or hire lawyers to fight the laws
![Page 20: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
The government sought to make
natives like other CanadiansIf you served in the army ... you
became white
![Page 21: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
The government sought to make
natives like other CanadiansIf you went to
university you became white
![Page 22: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The government sought to make
natives like other Canadians
If you were a woman and
married a white man you became
white
![Page 23: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The law has been amended many times
most recently in 1986
![Page 24: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
It is the only law in Canada that
discriminates based on race
![Page 25: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
And yet ...
natives don't want to get rid of it yet
![Page 26: Intro to indian act](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032502/55b7bc2bbb61eb843c8b45a7/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
because ...
it guarantees land
