    The Black Death killed 1/3 of thepopulation of Europe

    Some people turned to religion tofind answers, but others turnedaway from the Church

    There was more land and fewerworkers in Europe now- peoplecould demand better treatmentfrom landlords-they looked to lifeon earth for happiness- not justheaven.

    The garments of dead were turnedinto rag paper- books becamecheaper at the same time theprinting press (a Chinese, Korean,German invention) evolved

    Italy?

    Italian city-states looked to thesea for their economicprosperity. Genoa and Venicecontrolled the Mediterraneantrade routes that connected

    Europe with the Islamic,Mongol, and ByzantineEmpires.

    they believed that they earnedtheir social ranks (unlikenobility) so placed highemphasis on individual merit

    Enjoyment of worldly pleasures-without offending God

    Patrons of the arts- the Roman Catholic Church and thewealthy

    Renaissance men strive to master almost every areaof study (universal man) both academic and artistic (be adancer, poet, scholar, and a swordsman etc.)

    Renaissance women- inspire art but rarely create it,know Classics and be charming but dont seek fame
