28 Showcase Engineering, University of Salford

Design Concept

The creation of a prominent, iconic gateway to the Peel campus is at the heart of the design concept. Currently, the New Adelphi stands alone in performing this function. The challenge has been developing a proposal that does not detract from the Adelphi but complements it and completes an entrance befitting of both the function and aspirations of the University. An equal and opposite reaction.

The proposed form of the extension is such that it draws the eye to the gateway and at the same time down to the building at street level below. The folded elements that form the majority of the roof and exoskeleton like canopies appear to peel away from the building at the northwest corner facing the Adelphi, drawing you in and inciting intrigue regarding the building’s function. On closer inspection, the showcase will start to reveal itself, firstly with a long active frontage facing the Adelphi and then once inside with displays and informal presentations describing the breadth and complexity of work and research being undertaken.

Progressing inside will reveal more of the route into the depths of the building, a clear desire line is established to draw the pedestrian in. Alongside this primary route through the space will be live workshops / labs; further enhancing the exposure of the school. The space will be overlooked by a balcony at first floor level which will have more flexible teaching and meeting space off it.

There is a real opportunity with this scheme to open up and sell the University through the architecture. Combining the concepts of Newton’s 3rd Law and the revealing of internal function creates a strong architectural concept that has grounding in both context and function. We hope it is interesting, engaging and inspiring all at the same time.

How DAY can helpBIM Services

At DAY Architectural we would intend to use BIM in the design, development, co-ordination and

delivery of our projects to add value to the consortium, if we

were appointed. Our specialist designers and Technicians

have many years of delivering large and small, new build and refurbishment projects using

Revit and Navisworks.

• Establish client priorities and assist with briefing and realizing

the vision• Understand client interpretation

and their business goals• Understand advantages and

benefits in practice• Advise clients of gains, benefits

and returns on investment• Facilitate improvements and assist

downstream activitiesCommunicate methods and

procedures as guidance

• Build common collaboration platforms to enable delivery (We would recommend Navisworks as this is easy to use and a free piece of software that

the client team can use)• Facilitate project workshops, training

and knowledge sharing • Advise on technology requirements to best leverage BIM (Level 2 BIM as

required by 2016)• Partnering to everyone’s benefit

(Collaborations).

How DAY can helpSustainable Design

As part of the design process we would also carry out a life

cycle modelling of the proposed building, working alongside the Cost Consultant to make

the building as future proof as possible.

• Fabric first approach.• Consideration of embodied energy

during the design process.• Consideration of the introduction of

renewable energy technologies such as ground source heat pumps and Solar PV

panels etc.• Use of renewable, recycled,

refurbished, lightweight, durable and non-polluting materials.

• Establishment of a ‘Sustainability Champion’ within the Client/

Partnership Organisation.

We believe sustainability is integral to the design process and we work

closely with our clients and consultants to achieve a solution that fits each

project ‘‘one solution does not fit all’’. DAY utilises experienced in house staff

to develop innovative architectural solutions to create greener, sustainable commercial developments for the future

not just during the design process but also post occupation for both employers,

employees and clients through the BSRIA Soft Landings Process.
