Dr. George Hoag, founder of Essentalia has owned a horse farm with his wife, Meredith for more than 30 years.

He successfully competed in Combined Driving with his pair of Welsh Cross pony sisters, Faire and Lily, for many years.

Dr. Hoag has several patents and developed many consumer products, using green and sustainable chemistry, including essential oils.

His goal was to develop the best performing liniment for horses in the marketusing chemicals in essential oils that have been demonstrated to turn off pain sensorsand associated inflammation response and to turn on analgesic sensors that relievepain and inflammation, based on peer-reviewed academic research.

Why Topical Analgesics? Similar in Horses and Humans!

• Topical Analgesics are applied to the location of pain

• Because they are not systemic like orally or injected Non Steroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), they have minimal side effects, generally limited to skin irritation in a small number of horses at the location of application

• In Humans -NSAIDs taken orally are one of the most common causes of reported serious adverse reactions to drugs - involve the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, liver, and kidneys

• Extremely recent field of Research – last 10 years – Think of nociceptors as conduits holding many wires and the tips of the wires are different Transient Receptor Potential Sensors – some sense warm, hot, cool, cold, different chemicals that cause pain/burning, sense cutting, impacts….

• When a horse has an impact, muscle or joint injury, Transient Receptor Potential sensors are triggered and send electrical signals to the brain, the horse feels pain, and electrical signals are sent to the point of injury and inflammation occurs.

Existing Liniment Products for Horses

• Most work by evaporation of an alcohol, acetone or witch hazel which causes a very temporary cooling effect….when solvent evaporates cooling is complete

• Alcohol and acetone are known skin irritants, cause drying of skin and have toxicity issues

• Little real support that witch hazel does anything, some research that it can reduce sores on the skin and can be an astringent (skin tightening and anti-inflammation – most witch hazel also contains alcohol.

• Many liniments also contain herbal ingredients some of which do have some known benefits, but have limited pain and inflammation effects
