OSAKA, JAPAN

Mariko Sumioka creates sculptural jewellery evocative of both East and West. Her inspiration is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and Zen principles. She is fascinated by traditional Japanese architecture: natural materials and colour, dark and bright contrasts, linear forms, geometric shapes and spaces.

At Edinburgh College of Art, she developed her unique abstract aesthetic by combining precious metals with bamboo, enamel, patina and antique kimono. This collaging approach is an essential part of her creative process, along with a love for beautifully crafted details. The stories told inside these precious, miniature compositions are unfinished – it is up to you, the wearer to invent the rest.

“I feel awe and respect for natural and man-made objects which have been there and lived since ancient times. This idea is deeply rooted in my origin: Japanese culture and environments. The Japanese people respect, understand and accept nature as one of their members.”

Japanese metalsmith Koichi Io’s award-winning metalwork demonstrates traditional hand raising and chasing techniques; resulting in elegant and fluid metal vessels that showcase his incredable talent for metalworking.

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Koichi Io studied metalwork at Musashino Art University before completing his Masters at Seoul National University, College of Fine Art in 2012.

Koichi hand raises metal into dynamic organic forms. He is always aware of both sides of the metal; the exterior and interior of the vessel. This approach creates different impressions in the various kinds of alloys he uses. As well as conventional alloys such as silver, copper, brass and iron, Koichi also uses traditional Japanese alloys and metal colouring such as Shakudo (copper 97%, gold 3%) which date back to the 17th Century. He aims to manipulate these traditional techniques creating a contemporary aesthetic.
