Need & Importance of Mathematics Textbook

A geed mathematics textbook is not only a lucid tool for the pupils, but also

a tool in the hands of a mathematics teacher. A teacher uses the textbook to fulfill

the following needs.

A teacher can provide guidelines to his pupils.

It helps in saving time and energy.

It helps in improving teaching efficiency.

It helps to complete the assigned homework at home.

It can develop habit of self study in the students.

The teacher can use it as reference book and teaching aid.

It helps the pupils to do drill work.

It can be used as a means of imparting new knowledge.

The pupils may have proper view of the subject matter to be studied.

Characteristics of a good text book

A teacher of mathematics, while selecting a textbook for making instruction

effective should ensure that it maintain certain qualities. The following are the

characteristics of a good textbook.

It should be moderately priced.

It should be free from mistakes.

It should cover the latest syllabus.

It should meet the needs of all categories of students.

The book should be written in psychological and logical order.

It should contain some environmental examples.

It should provide recapitulation of the subject taught in the previous class.

It should facilitate the use of analytic, synthetic, inductive, deductive,

problems solving and heuristic approaches to teaching.

CONCLUSION

In Mathematics, the aim of teaching is to help the student in

arriving at the station of problems and to discover related rules and

formula. How ever no teacher can proceed properly without the use of

textbooks. But its use in teaching would be proper if the teacher

supplements it by this oral exposition through illustrative and objective

techniques.
