IntroductionInnovationNetworkSchoolsareschoolsthatoperateinpartnershipwithIndianapolisPublicSchoolsandwereestablishedasaresultofstatelegislationpassedin2014.ThefirstInnovationNetworkSchoolsagreementswereapprovedin2015forthefollowingschools:EmmaDonnanElementarySchool,EnlaceAcademy,KIPPIndyCollegePrepMiddleSchool,KIPPUniteElementarySchool,andPhalenLeadershipAcademyatFrancisScottKeySchool103.Inthe2016-17schoolyear,fouradditionalschoolsbecameInnovationNetworkSchools:GeorgeFisherSchool93;ColdSpringSchool;GlobalPreparatoryAcademyatRiversideSchool44;andKindeziAcademyatJoyceKilmerSchool69.Sevenschoolswereaddedforthecurrent2017-18schoolyear.TheyareAvondaleMeadowsMiddleSchool;EdisonSchooloftheArts;HerronHighSchool;IgniteAchievementAcademyatElderDiggs42;PurduePolytechnicHighSchool;RiversideHighSchool;andThomasGreggNeighborhoodSchool15.Combined,ourInnovationNetworkSchoolsserveapproximately6,400students,orabout20%ofstudentsinIPS.Theyalsorepresent23%ofthedistrict’sportfolioofschools.TheprogramofferingsacrossInnovationNetworkSchoolsarediverseandspandifferentschooltypes—neighborhood,choice,andcharter.WhilestudentproficiencyoutcomesacrossInnovationNetworkSchoolsvaries,forschoolsthathavestateassessmentdatasincetransitioningtoanInnovationNetworkSchool,studentgrowthhasremainedconstantand—inmostcases—improved.Additionally,studentenrollmenthasremainedsteadyorincreased,withparticularenrollmentincreasesinschoolsthathavebeenrestartedaswellschoolsthatconvertedtobecomeInnovationNetworkSchools.ThefollowingreportswerecompiledbyourInnovationNetworkSchoolleadershipteamstoprovidetheIPSBoardofCommissionersandpublicwithanupdateonprogresstogoals,academicoutcomes,andopportunitiestotackleinthenearfuture.Areportofthisnatureisrequiredsemi-annuallybylaw.Datashouldberelativelyconsistentacrossallschools,butsomedifferencesinreportformatmaybepresentduetoschooltype,formativeassessmenttype,orageofInnovationSchool.AllInnovationSchoolsmustsetgoalsforacademicperformanceaspartoftheInnovationAgreementprocess.ThosegoalsarecapturedintheInnovationApplications,andalsoreflectedinthecharterapplicationsandaccountabilityprocessforrelevantschools.Thesegoalsareindividualizedtoeachschoolcontext,consideringtheuniqueneedsofthestudentswithintheschoolcommunity.SchoolleaderslookforwardtoansweringCommissionerquestionsattheDecember5thIPSBoardWorkSession.

Whatisthebiggestopportunityforyouinthecomingmonths?Wearereallyexcitedaboutourschool'sfuturegrowthintoournewbuilding.TheexpansiontoAvondaleMeadowsAcademyisexpectedtobecompletebyspring2018.Itisourbeliefthatourbuildingwillhelpuswithrecruitmentofnewfamiliesandwillbetheperfecttransitionforour5thgradersattheelementaryschool.Withthisgrowth,weareanticipatinggrowingourstaffandadaptingoursystems.
Whathighlightwouldyouliketosharewiththeboard?SchoolcultureisbigatAMMSandeachweekscholarscompeteinahousecompetitionagainstoneanother,HarryPotterstyle.Everyscholarbelongstoahouseandthestudentsearnincentives.ScholarsrecentlycompetedtoseewhichhousecouldcollectthemostcannedfooditemsfortheJulianCenter.Together,ourstudentscollectednearly1500cans.AMMShashadanattendancerateabove95%forthefirst3monthsofschool.Ourclassroomteachershadperfectattendanceforthefirstquarterortheschoolyear.Wehavehadanumberofsuccessfulparentevents.TheseeventsincludeaFamilyReunion,BacktoSchoolNight,MuffinswithMom,DonutswithDad,2ParentUniversitiesandParent/TeacherConferences.

mannerthatallowsstudentstotakeownershipoftheirlearningandmakeagreaterimpactwithintheircommunity.Whatisthebiggestopportunityforyouinthecomingmonths?WehaveanopportunitytomakesignificantgrowthonNWEAbytheendoftheyearthatwouldbeatestamenttoourschoolmodelandcurricularchoices.Earlydataindicatesthatstudentsareonapositivetrajectoryandwelookforwardtoseeingourstudents’growthastheycontinuethroughouttheyear.Weseeanopportunitytoimprovethecultureandclimateoftheschoolthroughourresponsiveclassroompractices,social-emotionallearninganddedicatedCultureSupportTeam.WeareexcitedtowidentheimpactofoursupportsforstudentsandfamiliesthroughourcontinuedpartnershipswithneighborhoodresourcesandtheexpansionofourFamilySupportsTeam.Thereisatremendousopportunityforprofessionaldevelopmentparticularlywithnewcurricularmaterialsandpersonalizedlearningimplementation.Whathighlightwouldyouliketosharewiththeboard?Wearebeingembracedbystudentsandfamiliesasaninnovationschool.Participationatourfamilyeventshasbeenhigherthaneverbefore.Bothstudentsandfamiliesarerecognizingthepositivechangeshappeningattheschoolandarepleasedtobeconsideredapartnerintheirchild’seducation.WeareseeingourhighestenrollmentnumbersinseveralyearsandweareexcitedtoseemoreandmorefamilieschoosingTGNSandtheNearEastsideastheirhome.Wearepleasedwiththecaliberoftheteamwehavebeenabletoputtogether.Thisgroupexhibitsthedrive,energyandpassionneededtodothisworkatahighlevel.Newteachersandveteranteachersalikearededicatedtoourstudentsandarecommittedtoimplementingoureducationalmodel.Studentshavehadtheopportunitytoengageinmorehands-onlearningthaneverbeforewhilefindingwaystogivebacktotheircommunitythroughservicelearningprojects.Asanexample,KindergartenstudentsvisitedseniorcitizensattheBonerCenter’sSeniorCenterandperformedsongs,readbooksandmadecraftswiththeirnewfriends.Anotherexampleisour4thand5thgradestudentsthatresearchedaneedinthecommunityanddecidedtopartnerwithOutreachInc.,aneighborhoodorganizationthatsupportshomelessyouth.Thestudentsdevelopedafundraisingcampaign,wrotelettersforsupportandpurchasedmaterialtocreateblanketsforthesheltertouseduringthewintermonths.Studentsusedtheirwritingskillsfortheirfundraiserandmathskillsformeasuringandcuttingtheirmaterial!Theseprojectshavebeenahugehitwiththestudentsandweareexcitedtoseewhatfutureprojectstranspireastheyeargoeson!
