IntroductionSlide

Skills shortages in the construction industry are a big problem that each of the devolved governments across the UK is keen to solve

To help in providing a solution, we’ve developed new, high quality interactive digital learning resources that are mapped to construction qualifications across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

This includes the new T-Level qualification being introduced in England from September 2020, as well as NVQs and SVQs at levels 2 and 3 and the latest National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Speaker

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to attend the webinar today. Could I just check first that you can all hear me okay? Please type yes into the comments box just to confirm that you can all hear me. If you have any issues please type them into the comments box and we will do our best to resolve them. I am Helen Foster, the curriculum service support officer for the FE team here at Jisc, and this afternoon I will be taking you through one of our brand new skills services, construction training. I am joined this afternoon by my colleague Hannah who will be trouble shooting any problems, so please type any concerns into the chat panel. Hannah is also going to share with you the link to a very short feedback survey, which we would be really grateful if you filled out at the end of the webinar. We really value your feedback to help us improve future webinars, so please do take a moment to fill it in at the end.

If you have any questions throughout the webinar, please type them into the comments box. There will be time devoted to questions at the end of the session, so I will pick up any questions then.

We appreciate that you are all really busy, so thank you for finding the time to join us today. We will be making the recording available for you to share with colleagues who were unable to attend today.

Construction training is one of three brand training services that the Jisc FE and skills team launched last week.

We have created a new skills service for construction skills for a variety of reasons. Skills shortages in the construction sector are a growing problem – in the cyber security specialism alone, the UK could be struggling to fill 100,000 jobs by 2022, according to the most recent Global Information Security Workforce Study (GISWS) (iamcybersafe.org/gisws).

To help in providing a solution, we’ve developed new, high quality interactive digital learning resources that are mapped to construction qualifications across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The resources also cover the new T Level being introduced in England from September 2020, as well as NVQs and SVQs at Level 3. Our resources are also mapped to the latest National Occupational Standards (NOS) which ensures that learners are ready for the digital workplace.

OverviewSlide

Gamification principles appeal to learners with different learning styles

The interactive content includes quizzes, activities, videos and case studies that reflect realistic work-based scenarios

We’ll keep it up to date with curriculum and legislation changes

Legislation to cover England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Speaker

The new digital learning resources use gamification principles to appeal to learners with different learning styles.

The interactive content includes quizzes, activities, videos and case studies that reflect realistic work-based scenarios.

We’ll keep the service up to date to reflect changes to the curriculum and legislation changes, as well as making sure it’s refreshed regularly to keep learners coming back.

We have ensured that all legislation referred to covers all 4 home nations, so you can be confident that you can find the content that is relevant to your home nation.

Each resource is linked to a Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) unit; these units provide a flexible structure that allows qualifications to be awarded through a range of combinations of units to make up different qualifications. Our resources are mapped to QCF units, rather than qualifications from specific awarding bodies, so that they can be accessed by a range of learners across many organisations, regardless of which qualification they are studying towards.

The resources are also in preparation for the forthcoming T Level qualification from September 2020 in England, and cover all content for the new T Levels.

Mapping to the QCF units means that our resources are awarding body agnostic; this benefits teaching practitioners because it allows the flexibility to select relevant resources to your organisation, and you don’t need to worry about changes to qualifications, or if your organisation switches to a different qualification.

Each unit is mapped to the latest National Occupational Standards, meaning that our resources are excellent preparation for the workplace. Practitioners can have the confidence that our resources are preparing learners for the rigours and demands of the workplace.

Most of our construction resources are linked to Level 3 units, because we have found that students at this level are most likely to engage with digital resources.

Further information regarding curriculum links will be available on the support site when this is live in the coming weeks.

For now, you can visit the unit list which is available on the service site. Let’s take a look at the unit list now.

Speaker

We believe that our construction service provides many excellent benefits for both teaching practitioners and learners. Firstly, our resources can save teaching practitioners valuable time by reducing time spent searching for and creating high quality resources. The content was developed in collaboration with current teaching practitioners, so you can be confident that the resources are relevant and reliable, and made by people like you. The resources support blended learning.

The service contains reliable, ready-made resources that can be used in the classroom or as homework. The resources are engaging and interactive and designed to meet a range of learning needs. The resources provide excellent value for money, and each unit contains additional supporting materials to support learning.

The resources cover a range of qualifications, so you can be confident that there is material to support your learners. The training service also supports non-subject specialist teaching staff who may need support in directing learners to high quality training resources.

The resources also various elements of functionality to support accessibility and inclusion, which will be covered in further detail later in the webinar.

Blended learning – include our videos, guides, quizzes, activities, infographics and games in lesson plans

Flipped learning – introduce learners to content before the lesson and then use valuable classroom time to support learners

Independent learners – encourage learners to access the resources themselves to improve their digital literacy

Interactive revision – promote the resources as a revision tool, to motivate learners to revise more effectively

On the go – our resources can be accessed from a range of devices, so can be accessed on the journey to college

Speaker

Our construction training service can be used to support teaching and learning in a variety of ways. When you sign-up, you will receive a welcome pack filled with tips about how to embed the resources into teaching and learning. Here are some to get you started.

Blended learning – lessons can be made digital and interactive by adding resources to your lesson plan. Include our videos, guides, quizzes, activities, infographics and games. For example, introduce a topic using a video, test learners understanding using a quiz or activity, and consolidate understanding using a guide.

Flipped learning – Introduce learners to content before the lesson and then use valuable face to face classroom time to support them as they practice what they’ve learned. Learners can use the resources as consolidation of topics covered in class, or to teach themselves material before coming to class. This approach can make lesson time more valuable, as teaching time can be used to clarify misconceptions and discuss knowledge gained.

Our resources can be used to create independent learners. Encourage learners to access the resources themselves to improve their digital literacy, and better prepare them for higher education or the workplace.

Our resources can be used to make revision more interactive and engaging – this can help to motivate learners to revise more effectively.

Our resources can be used on a range of devices, meaning that students can use them on the go – perfect for revising or preparing for lessons on the way to and from college.

Most units follows a similar structure and include: curriculum-mapped learning outcomes, essentials, case study, reflection, activity and summary sections

Extensive glossary of terms

Audio that can be turned on/off

Notifications that give supporting information

Supporting resources such as guides

Speaker

Each unit is an interactive package with a range of supporting materials in the form of supplementary guides, infographics, worksheets and workbooks. All of these resources can be downloaded and printed, and can be used as classroom activities or homework materials.

The resources include a range of activities to appeal to different learning styles. Each resource is An interactive SCORM package with additional supporting resources. Each unit is typically made up of five sections of learning: learning objectives, essentials, reflection, case study and activity.

Some resources contain additional sections such as videos, and we will take a look at an example of a video later in the webinar.

Users can use the navigation bar along the bottom to view their progress as they work through the unit.

The learning objectives outline what will be achieved in each resource; the essentials slides contain the key information required to meet the learning objectives. This learning is then applied to some real-world case studies, which encourage learners to consider how this learning would apply in the work setting. The reflection section then uses theories of reflection such Kolb to encourage students to reflect on what they have learned in each resource. Finally, knowledge is tested in the activity section, which acts as a plenary to reinforce knowledge gained. Each resource contains a summary, which picks out the key points of learning from the module.

All resources have an audio function to aid accessibility for visually impaired learners. This can be turned on or off on each slide, depending on learner need. The resources also contain notifications; this function will direct the learner to relevant material that is related to the topic, although not necessarily required to meet the learning outcomes.

Each resource is accompanied by an extensive glossary of terms that can be accessed at any point throughout the learning, to check understanding of key terms. Each unit also contains supporting resources such as guides, which can be printed off to supplement the learning.

Demonstration of Electrical systems design activitySpeaker

We are going to take a look now at the enterprise technology resource. This resource varies slightly from the usual structure of the resources which was outlined earlier in the webinar. As you can see on the navigation bar along the bottom, this resource contains an additional video and an accompanying guide; these are in place of the case study and reflection, although knowledge is still tested in the activity section.
