Passage: Matthew 4:1-11

Introduction:   ‘Temptation’- is a daily reality in our human lives on this earth

1 Corinthians 10:1313 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Jesus  underwent  the  temptation  all  his  life  and came out victorious and sinless (Read Mark 8:11)

Hebrews 2:1818 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 4:1515 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

Matthew 4:11 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

The Main Characters:

Jesus, the Devil and the Holy Spirit.

1. The Old Testament Testing: 1.1 Adam- Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-24)- Failed

1.2 Israel - Wilderness (Deuteronomy 8:1-20) - Failed

1 Corinthians 10:66 Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.

1.3 Jesus – New Adam & Israel (1 Cor. 15:45) - Victory

2. The 2 Baptisms-Water & Spirit: (Matthew 3:13-17)

Why: …to fulfil all righteousness…

1. Jesus was baptized,

2. He went up out of the water (Read also Luke 3:21)

3. Heaven was opened

4. Spirit of God descend like a dove on him

5. Voice from heaven(Read also 2 Samuel 7:14, Isaiah 42:1 & Psalm 2:7)

Matthew 4:11 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

3. Led by the Holy Spirit: (Matthew 4:1-2)

Romans 8:14-1514 For  those who are  led by  the  Spirit  of God are  the children  of  God. 15 The  Spirit you  received  does  not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the  Spirit  you  received brought  about  your  adoption to sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba,  Father.

Luke 4:11 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Galatians 5:1616 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

4. Wilderness Experience: (Matthew 4:1-2)

Matthew 4:1-21 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Deuteronomy 8:22 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

Galatians 1:1717 I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.

5. Tempted by the Devil: (Matthew 4:1-2) Luke 4:2 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

Mark 1:1313 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

1 Thessalonians 3:55 …I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labours might have been in vain.

2 Corinthians 2:10-1110 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

Conclusion: 

Jesus was tempted but he was victorious by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Devil continues to do his full time job of tempting people to sin even today.
