Introduction

The cancerGrid metadata registry (cgMDR) has proved effective as a lightweight, desktop solution, interoperable with caDSR, targeted at the day-to-day needs of cancer researchers, data managers, and software developers.

A decentralized, peer-to-peer metadata registry solution based on the ISO/IEC 11179, it allows management and reuse of semantic metadata data elements during software development within an institution or collaborative group before or alongside the processes of wider review and adoption.

To be successful it must be easy to install and use, with an emphasis upon simplified metadata integration and support qualification for caBIG™ Silver-level compatibility.

Technology

Key Features for caBIG™ Areas for Enhancement

Simplify management of downloaded content and exchange between local and central registries. Work out download and reuse of caDSR Classifications.

Expand EA and Excel Addin support to use additional types of registry and terminology content. Add visual clues in Excel to identify individually annotated cells. Enhance search and results display to include identifiers.

Optimize inserted content and UML Loader to meet caCORE end user needs and standard conventions for annotations and tagged values.

Technical Constraints

Software stack restrictions Addins ArgoUML not supported, tested on Windows XP SP 2, OS X Leopard, both in local and server modes, did not test Linux; currently not caGrid enabledQSM CDEs with large value sets caused failures, needs tuningAddins Enable query by identifier , expand to include all types of registry content – Value Domain, Concept, Object Class, Property, Data Element Concept, Value Meaning, Representation Term, Conceptual DomainFindings Installation process successful, straightforward and easy to use, progress bars and ‘successful’ messages throughout.

Summary

cgMDR provides a practical decentralized desktop metadata registry solution for caBIG™. Easy to follow instructions, simple to install, setup and use, well integrated with caDSR, NCI Thesaurus and NCI Metathesaurus open APIs and web services. Next steps include few essential enhancements to cgMDR, engaging potential community adopters for more complete testing, document and confirm high priority use cases and suitability for caBIG™ community acceptance.
