Introduction to A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics
at
The Highcrest Academy
Your AS Level in Mathematics is made up of two pure Maths modules (Core 1 & Core 2) and an applied Maths module (Mechanics 1). In order to fully prepare for the
course you must complete the highlighted questions from section 1 AND all of section 2.
If it is your intention to study AS Further Mathematics in addition to AS Mathematics, you must complete the
whole booklet.
The completed booklet must be submitted to Miss McIlfatrick by Friday 4th September 2015.
Failure to do so could compromise your place on the course.

In year 12, you will study three modules in order to complete your AS Mathematics: Core 1, Core 2 and Mechanics 1. Core 1 will be taught for the duration of half a year for 4 lessons per week. Once this module has been completed (around January) teaching for Core 2 will begin. Mechanics 1 will be taught for the duration of year 12 and will be timetabled for 2 lessons per week. The content of the modules are detailed below. Core Mathematics C1 Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series;
differentiation; integration. C2 Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series;
trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration. Mechanics M1 Mathematical models in mechanics; vectors in mechanics; kinematics of a particle
moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; statics of a particle; moments.
In year 13, you will study three modules in order to complete your A2 Mathematics: Core 3, Core 4 and Statistics 1. Core 3 will be taught for the duration of half a year for 4 lessons per week. Once this module has been completed (around January) teaching for Core 4 will begin. Statistics will be taught for the duration of year 13 and will be timetabled for 2 lessons per week. The content of the modules are detailed below. Core Mathematics C3 Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation;
numerical methods. C4 Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series;
differentiation; integration; vectors. Statistics S1 Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of
data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.

Preparation for the Course
In order to be fully prepared for your AS Mathematics studies, the following is recommended:
x Complete the A to A* Online Booster worksheets on MyMaths. http://www.mymaths.co.uk (See Miss. McIlfatrick to set up an account, if you do not have one)
x Purchase a study guide to help “bridge the gap” between GSCE and AS-Level Mathematics. Any of the following would be appropriate:
