Screw Caps

• Open hole design, seal holds firmly while allowing the

Screw Thread Measurements: Screw thread dimensions are

designated by a two part number, for example 8/425. The first

number indicates the diameter of the threads across the mouth of

the vial, here 8mm. The second number is a standardized specifi-

cation for thread styles, set by the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI)

and are uniform among American manufacturers.

Seals

Seal Thickness: Seal and facing thickness are listed in millime-

ters in this catalog. Some references express thickness in mils

(thousands of an inch). In general, thicker facings on the seal are

better since thicker materials are less permeable to volatile com-

pounds. One tradeoff, however, is that thicker facings are more

difficult to pierce with an autosampler syring needle.

Standard Seal

• Synthetic rubber, faced with 0.03 mm layer of PTFE

• Total thickness is 1 mm

• High grade resealable seal

• Made from silicone faced on one side with 0.08 mm PTFE

• Premium grade, resealable

Introduction to Autosampler Vials

Vial Selection Process

Most GC and HPLC Autosamplers Use One of Three Size Vials:

• 8 x 30 mm (0.8 mL)

• 12 x 32 mm (1.8 mL)

• 15 x 45 mm (4 mL)

These vials are available in:

• Screw Top

• Crimp Top

• Snap Top

• Shell Styles

Inserts can be used in vials when only a small amount of sample is available or

needed. Small springs are sometimes used to support the insert.

In addition, a one-piece reduced volume vial with the same external volume of the

stadard vial and the “Sleeve System” of supporting micro vials in plastic sleeves

can also be used with small volume samples. The sleeves have the same outer

dimensions as the standard vials and fit many popular autosamplers.

Headspace Autosamplers: Vials come in four sizes, 23 x 38 mm (6mL), 23 x 46

(10mL), 23 x 75 mm (20mL) and 30 x60 mm (27 mL)

Materials Used in Vial Manufacture

Type 1 Borosilicate Glass

• Includes Type A and Type B glasses specified in ASTM E438

“Glasses in Laboratory Apparatus”

• 33-expansion glass has a coefficient of expansion of 33 x 10-7

cm/cmo C and is a commonly used Type A glass. It is sold

under trademarks Pyrex, Kimax and Duran

• 51-expansion glass is a Type B glass which is popular in

many laboratory applications

• CRS uses only Type 1 borosilicate glass in our autosampler,

EPA and headspace vials

Type II Glass

• Lower grade glass, also known as flint or soda-lime glass

• Has a lower softening point than borosilicate glass

• Inexpensive to make, but less suitable than borosilicate

glass for analytical techniques that requires high sensitivity

Importance of Glass Type:

Water is one of the most severe solvents frequently used in glass

vials. It can slowly dissolve traces of silica and other constituents

from the vials’ wall, altering the pH and potentially causing

increased surface area on which analytes may adsorb. In a com-

parison test between soda-lime glass and borosilicate glass, how-

ever, it has been shown that there is approximately thrity times

less leachables by weight over time from borosilicate glass, with

water as the solvent.

There is very little difference in extractables between Type 1

Class A and B borosilicate glass.

Polypropylene

• Used for disposable autosampler vials because of its

good chemical resistance, physical toughness and low cost

• Recommended for ion chromatography because of its

extremely low metal content and excellent cleanability with

dilute acid followed by deionized water rinse

• Translucent and autoclavable

• Continuous use temperature limit is 105 oC

TPX (Polymethylpentene)

• Popular plastic for vials and general laboratory use because

it is nearly as clear as glass

• Chemical resistance approaches that of polypropylene,

except with some aromatics and chlorinated hydrocarbons

which causes it to soften over time

• Withstands repeated autoclaving to 150 oC

• Fairly brittle at room temperature and may crack or break if

dropped

Chemical Properties of Seal Materials

FEP Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene

• A fluorocarbon with inertness similar to PTFE

• Clear and more flexible than PTFE, thus making an ideal

sealing material

PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene

• Extremely inert

• Excellent sealing material and has good cleanability for

metals

Silicone

• Outstanding thermal stability, resilience and flexibility

• Allows the material to seal repeatedly after needle penetra-

tion

Rubber

• For most seals used today, it is a blend of natural and

synthetic materials

• Good low cost seal material with moderate re-sealing capa-

bilities

Chlorobutyl Rubber

• Synthetic rubber that offers excellent resistance to most

solvents

• High puncture tolerance and resists coring

• Usable temperature range is -40 oC to 125 oC

1.5 mL, 1.8 mL,

or 2.0 mL Vials?

Different manufacturers rate the capacity of their 12 x 32 mm

vials differently, due to different choices of volume at which a

vial is considered full. However, the dimensions of the vials are

the same. You can buy autosampler vials from CRS with confi-

dence; simply check the vial / autosampler cross-reference

chart on pages 126 - 127 to get the right vial for your instrument.

The CRS electronic crimping tools are powered by a standard Black and Decker VersaPak® bat-

tery and will cycle hundreds of times on a single charge. The cycle of all of these tools is con-

trolled precisely with an internal counter and is adjusted with two buttons on the side of the case.

The tools fit comfortably in the hand and weigh about 600 grams. When used in a seated position

the jaws can be positioned easily around closely-spaced vials in standard autosampler trays.

The complete tool comes with a VersaPak® Gold rechargeable battery, which uses environmental-

ly friendly NiMH technology, and a charger. Recharging generally takes 6-9 hours.The CRS elec-

tronic crimping tools are available in versions for most countries.

The HD Crimper is designed to take on tasks that exceed the capability of the battery-pow-

ered electronic crimper. The HD Crimper controller box contains a universal 150 watt dc

power supply that can be plugged into the ac line (120/230volt 50/60 hz).

The motor is powerful enough to crimp and remove magnetic steel crimp caps used in

autosamplers with magnetic pickup arms. Even these caps can be crimped in approximately

1.5 seconds.

The portable tool portion of the HD crimper is connected to the controller box with a flexible

cable. It can be mounted in a support bracket that is attached to the rear of the case, or it

can be used as a portable tool when working with vials in racks.

The crimp cycle can also be started with an optional foot pedal.

For use when you have only a small amount of sample available for analysis.

• Available in a variety of styles, to fit both standard-mouth and wide-mouth 1.8 mL,

12 x 32 mm vials.

• Inserts for standard-mouth vials measure 5 mm in diameter, while wide-mouth

inserts measure 6 mm in diameter. Inserts measure 31 mm in length, except for

TriSpring inserts, 29 mm.

Flat-bottom inserts have the largest capacity and are generally lowest in cost. They are

placed directly in the host vial.

Tapered-bottom inserts allow sampling of just microliters of liquid, with nearly complete with-

drawal from the tip. They are also set directly into the host vial. The tips are either drawn dur-

ing manufacture (“pulled points”) or formed (“mandrel points”).

TriSpring Inserts These handy inserts have a plastic spring already attached to the tapered

bottom. The spring centers the insert in the host vial and acts as a shock absorber if the insert

is touched by the autosampler needle.

Hanging Insert has a lip that rests on top of a wide-mouth crimp or screw top vial. The sep-

tum seals directly and positively against the insert, reducing the risk of solvent evaporation.

Not available for standard-mouth vials.

Tapered Inserts - Mandrel vs. Pulled Point

Tapered glass inserts are manufactured in differ-

ent ways. The point can either be flame-drawn

and pulled (pulled point) or shaped over a die

(mandrel point). The pulled point is less costly to

produce, while the mandrel point typically has

Preconditioned Septa for Headspace This is a 20 mm version of our popular seal for soil

sampling. Suitable for your most sensitive analysis; it is pre-conditioned to be free from

Chlorobutyl Septum (gray) This is made from pure chlorobutyl rubber, 3 mm thick. It is low

in cost for routine use. Chlorobutyl rubber has greater high-temperature stability compared

with standard butyl rubber.

Butyl Septum (black) Available pre-stuffed in the standard aluminum cap; see next page.

Bellows Seal Chlorobutyl rubber faced with PTFE for superior sample protection. Only PTFE

contacts the sample, while the soft outer ring of rubber makes a tight seal.

20 mm Caps

Standard Cap Made from lacquered aluminum with an open hole design. It fits the 6 mL, 10

mL, 20 mL and 27 mL headspace vials.

Safety Cap Specially designed to vent high-pressure gas at approximately 5 bar (78 psi).

The Safety Cap is made from aluminum.

Magnetic Cap This nickel plated steel cap is for use with autosamplers made by Leap and

CTC, and other autosamplers using a magnetic pick-up arm. May be used with the HD

Electronic Crimper; not suitable for use with the rechargeable 20 mm Electronic Crimper or

Magnetic Ring Crimp Cap This is a 20 mm aluminum crimp cap, pre-assembled with an

Headspace Vials - Screw Top

Precision-Thread Vials 10 mL and 20 mL Capacity

• Recommended for CTC instruments.

• Made from borosilicate glass.

These are an alternative to crimp-top headspace vials, which can be difficult to crimp manual-

ly when steel caps are used. The precision thread design allows a leak-tight seal with moder-

ate twisting force. Since they do not require crimpers or decappers, samples can be taken

and sealed in the field without the need for sample transfer in the lab. Waste solvent disposal

is also easy. Vials can be used either for traditional headspace analyses or SPME. Use with

magnetic screw caps and seals shown below. Vials have rounded bottoms and 18 mm diame-

ter necks. Dimensions: 10 mL vials, 46 x 23 mm; 20 mL vials, 76 mm x 23 mm.

Caps are available either open-hole for autosampler use, or solid (no-hole) for storing sam-

ples. They are made from polypropylene, or phenolic where noted. Choose the seal material

that is best for your sampling needs.

Pierceable Screw Caps for autosampler use are designed for fast and easy sample prepara-

tion; there are no seals to assemble. A 0.25 mm thick polypropylene seal is molded directly

into the cap, so it can’t fall out. Concentric raised ridges at the contact point with the vial

ensure a positive seal. Low cost for single-time use.

Polyethylene Plugs are suitable for most vials and autosamplers. Many people find them

easier to work with than crimp- or screw-caps; just push into the vial. Do not use polyethylene

plugs with systems that pressurize the vial.

Seal ST These are silicone faced with PTFE; only the PTFE contacts your sample.

Precision Decappers

Remove caps quickly and easily; avoids broken vials and sharp aluminum. Our precision

decappers are made with steel jaws for toughness and years of use. Simply hold the cap in

the decapper, squeeze, and the cap pulls off effortlessly. A necessity when dangerous sam-

ples must be collected before discarding vials. Available in four popular sizes: 8 mm for all

These precision, rechargeable tools are available for 8, 11, 13 and 20 mm crimp caps. The

Electronic Crimper allows hundreds of reproducible crimps from one charge, and has an easi-

ly-set, adjustable crimping force.

Autosampler Vial Holder

Our unique vial holder is fabricated from spongy foam plastic, to hold vials for filling, sample

prep or storage. Low enough in price to replace if they become contaminated. Holds 12–15

mm diameter vials. Also suitable for test tubes and reaction vials.

Vial Holders

Vial holders provide a convenient and accessible way to store samples. They are clear poly-

styrene cases with hinged lids, with alpha-numeric indexing for positive sample identification.

The vial holder will hold 40 to 60 vials in individual partitions. Foam inserts are included.

Vial Racks For Autosampler, Headspace and EPA Vials

These plastic racks are available with either 36 or 50 positions. The 36 position rack holds 6,

10 or 20 mL headspace vials, while the 50 position racks accommodate either 50, 40 mL EPA

vials or 50, 1.8 mL vials. Polypropylene racks are autoclavable at 121°C for 20 minutes, while

the polyethylene rack cannot be autoclaved. Racks have an alpha-numeric indexed vial grid

for convenient sample identification and are stackable. Polypropylene racks have openings in

the well bottoms for drainage. The 36 position rack measures 35/8" x 123/4" x 11/8". The 50

position rack for EPA vials measures 63/4" x 13" x 11/4". The 50 position rack for 1.8 mL vials

measures 4" x 7 5/8" x 1 1/8".

comes with six stainless steel needles, a nickel-plated needle valve, and 3 feet of plastic tub-
