Introduction to
Finite Element Analysis
MAE 456 – Finite Element Analysis 2
Three Aspects of this Course
1. Learning the practice of FEA
2. Learning to use Dassault SolidWorks FEA capabilities
3. Learning enough theory to practice FEA intelligently on your own

What is Finite Element Analysis?• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is setting up
the stress and strain equations for small pieces (elements) of a structure and then combining these equations to solve for the stresses and strains of the whole structure at once.

What is Finite Element Analysis?
More accurate but harder to understand definition:
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a numerical procedure to solve the governing equations of a body through piece-wise approximations applied to the entire body.
