FleetBroadband Services SnapshotNext generation maritime service from Inmarsat:

Broadband data

… plus voice

accessible simultaneously

through a single terminal

with guaranteed data rates on-demand

with ISDN data

that will be available globally

Messaging

What are the key benefits of FB?

• Higher throughput speeds• Simultaneous voice and IP data

functionality• Reliable• Flexible - multiple terminals

and service• Easy to manage• Supports crew welfare• Global coverage (upon

successful launch of I4-F3)• Conversion path from Fleet to

FB (manufacturers to provide exact details)

• Cost efficiency

Fleet to FleetBroadband Conversion

• JRCJRC have confirmed a Fleet 33 to FB 250 as well as Fleet 77 to FB 500. This will entail Below Deck Unit replacement, but maintaining existing Above Deck Unit

• Thrane– Thrane has released this

statement:– “T&T are investigating

the possibility of a conversion path from Fleet to FB. However, no firm decisions have been made yet”

Direct dial voice service

• Available on all new FB terminals

• Landline quality speech (4kbps)

• To and from – Terrestrial networks– Mobile networks– FB to FB

• Can be used simultaneously with data

• Supports Supplementary value-added services– Caller ID, Call Hold, Call Waiting– Call Forwarding, Call Barring

Crystal Clear Voice telephony

ISDN and 3.1Khz services

• FB System will support one circuit switched service at any one time

• One Single Channel ISDN Service supported on FB 500

• ISDN Supports legacy ISDN equipment

• FB 250 will support 3.1KHz audio only– Premium voice, data and fax

Page 10: Introduction to FleetBroadband The next generation in maritime communication services

SMS and Voice Mail

• Short Messaging Services (Text)– To/from other BGAN terminals– To/from terrestrial cellular

networks (subject to commercial

agreements)

• Voice Mail Service– SMS notification

Two FleetBroadband IP Service Types

Standard IP Streaming IP

Page 12: Introduction to FleetBroadband The next generation in maritime communication services

Standard IP

• Basic broadband data service charged for data sent and received

• Connections through to Internet or DP PoP and onwards

• Designed for TCP applications - typical office applications like email, web browsing, FTP, VPN

• Shared connection ‘pipe’; less traffic = higher throughput, more traffic = lower throughput; Contention.

• High demand triggers extra capacity allocation; dynamically assigned, real time

432kbps

Page 13: Introduction to FleetBroadband The next generation in maritime communication services

Streaming IP

• Schedule of reserved capacity - 3GPP

• Fixed rates - 32, 64, 128, 256 Kbps

• Your own ‘pipe’; not shared; no contention

• Aimed at UDP applications - Video and Audio applications – Quicktime, WinMedia

• Robustly tested – Media & Gov

FleetBroadband Launch Pad

• BGAN LaunchPad™

• Same user interface across all terminals

• Consistent user experience globally

• Set up a broadband mobile office in minutes

Page 15: Introduction to FleetBroadband The next generation in maritime communication services

FleetBroadband Launch Pad

• Simple and trusted - removes the ‘dark art’ of using a new service.

• Easy to sell, train and support - e.g. common error messages and same as BGAN

• Gives central control - over the way services are presented and deployed.

• Imposes documented, standard UT/TE interface - good for solutions developers

• Presents low cost e-Fax simply

• Presents SMS to multiple users - encourages easy access to Text messaging

• Unique platform for value added services

• Clear status display - users aware of services being used

• A way to deliver TCP PEP securely

Value For Money

Standard Rate Plan• No Subscription charges• Voice

– Less expensive then current Inmarsat voice services

– Priced competitively against Iridium

– 24 X 6 global voice pricing – Super Quiet Time will no longer be required

• ISDN– Priced similarly to current

• IP– Significant price reduction –

50% less expensive then MPDS– Additional discounts for higher

usage

Money Bundle Rate Plans• Package rate plan available for one

vessel/UT– Package includes voice and

standard IP– Flexible– Substantial value savings

Shared Fleet Bundle Rate Plan• Package rate available to a

number of vessels in one fleet– Package includes voice and

standard IP– Ability to control costs across a

fleet of vessels

FleetBroadband versus VSAT

Inmarsat• Operates in L-band• Not affected by weather – can

operate with 100% reliability• Global coverage• Bandwidth of up to 432 kbps• Low capital costs for antennas• Small antenna/lightweight• Only pay for WHEN and WHAT

you use • Easy to install and maintain

VSAT • Operates in Ku-band• Affected by weather – not

reliable during poor weather• ‘Patch-work’ coverage• Bandwidth of up to 2 m

downlink• Expensive capital costs for

antennas• Large antenna• Typically requires a long term

contract commitment• More time consuming

installation - licensing and equipment
