Installation
Installation
Installation(software)
We use a package manager, when installing software.
Rarely we have to download from the web via the browser
Compiling software is usually unecessary for desktop use, although the option for compiling them remains
Demo on Synaptic and PackageKit
Installation Details
It is very distro independent
Deb file is for debian, and ubuntu,
RPM file is for Red Hat based, aka Fedora, Suse
tar.gz file, tends to be source code, meant to be compiled, sometime proprietary binary executable, so the README file is important
Configuration
Network Manager
Desktop
Extra stuff.....
Demo on configuration
Configuration
Linux don't explicitly need to install driver to work,
It either or won't work, but a lot does work
And it do not require any driver, or rather, because of open source, driver pretty much comes with it
Few that need driver is, graphic cards
Unfortunately some manufacturer, just don't release driver or spec
Web Tools
Firefox works on Linux
For instant messaging, there is pidgin
Most distros will have empathy installed by default, soon.
Pidgin and Empathy supports all major protocol, Windows Live Messenger, yahoo messenger and so on.
Xchat for irc. Very useful when ask for help

Comparable with MS office.
And it is better as it is free! ;-)
And can save in .doc, .ppt etc.
GIMP

It does most of what photoshop does
Demo
GIMP
Other Useful app
F-Spot
Stardict
Tomboy
When everything Fails
Wine is the solution
But not all apps works.
Known to work software.
Or use virtualization
Most distros allows virtual machine to run easily.
Almost all uses KVM by default.
Some user prefer virtualbox, more easier to use.
In fact, the demo is done on KVM....
The end
A presentation is too brief to describe Linux thoroughly
So you are all welcome to try the computers provided
You are welcomed to ask the experienced users
So go ahead and install Linux by grabbing some CDs and asking around for tips and what not
