Introduction to Mosaic Art

Definition:The mosaic is a surface art form, or a decoration across a surface such as a sidewalk or a wall.

The history• The history of mosaic goes back 4,000 years or

more, with the use of terracotta cones pushed point-first into a background as a decoration. By the eighth century BC, there were pebble pavements, using different colored stones to create patterns, although these tended to be unstructured decoration. It was the Greeks, in the fourth century BC, who raised the pebble technique to an art form, with precise geometric patterns and detailed scenes of people and animals.

An ancient Greek mosaic shows the sea god Poseidon riding two dolphins. The mosaic was made from many small, flat colored stones.

• You can create mosaic art by employing different methods and working

with a variety of materials.

• Explore methods for creating realistic representations of three dimensional forms such as portraits, animals or landscape.

• The final mosaic is composed of hundreds or even thousands of parts of various sizes. The whole mosaic is a total composition that may be recognized as a specific shape or form

• Ancient mosaics were composed of tiny pieces of pebbles, marbles and other substances

• Today, these items can still be used. Mosaics can be created from many materials. Good examples are glass, tile, stone, marbles, beads, paper, and tissue paper.

Types of mosaic patters

• “Opus” means composition in Latin, or “a work”

• Usually related to music it also relates to works of art.

• Mosaics have different patters and layouts. It can be a single piece of stone, glass or ceramic, porcelain.

So what will we be doing?

We will be using tiles to create our own individual mosaic picture.

1. Start with a grid pattern paper and draw out ideas for a picture. -on the paper draw it how ever you want.

2. Look at the picture and brake it down into shapes on each area with The color in the box.

3. When you are ready you may collect your tile and start to create your

Own mosaic tile. (you may only start after you have completed a grid paper design.)You may want to raw your design on the tile you will be working with

Any picture you find, can be put into Photoshop and turned into a nice Mosaic I mage with the use of a filter. If you find a picture you want to useWe can try it if you stay after school or have a class in the computer lab.

Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old (or relatively limited) computer, console, graphing calculator and mobile phone video games are mostly pixel art.
