Plant Parts and Their Functions
Learning Target: I can describe the basic structures &
functions of plants.
Criteria for Success
❏Describe how special plant cell parts support the function in plants
❏Describe the function of stems, leaves, roots
❏Understand various plant processes
❏Understand various tropisms
Let’s begin by watching this awesome intro video clip!

1- When it comes to plants, I know…..

Plant Structures and Functions
I Plants- organisms that typically grow in permanent sites; produce
their own food; provide oxygen for other organisms.
II Plant Parts:
support leaves; stores and carries water and nutrients
to leaves; transport sugar to roots.
makes food; helps exchange gases in the envioronment
through stomata (small openings in the leaves).
absorbs water & minerals; anchors plant to soil;
supports the plant
Examples of Two Root Types
Taproot examples Fibrous roots
Check For Understanding- Think about it!
Make a connection between the two
special parts of a plant cell and the parts
of a plant from the previous slide.
Plant Processes
Part 2

III Plant Processes
1-Absorption = taking in water 2-
and nutrients
Transpiration = release of
water vapor from stomata in
leaves
Tool Box #54 Continued
3- Photosynthesis = the process (in leaves) of converting light
energy from the Sun to chemical energy (food= glucose)
a) Chloroplasts role = provide chlorophyll
b) Stomata role = allows the exchange of gases .

Tool Box #54 Continued
4- Cellular Respiration= the process that plant cells use to
convert energy stored in glucose into useable chemical energy
-occurs in the cytoplasm/ mitochondria of the cells
- ATP (adenosine triphoshate) = molecule where
energy is stored
IV-TropismsTropisms = plant growth toward or away from an external (outside) stimulus
A- Phototropism = growth toward light
B- Gravitropism = growth to and away from the force of gravity ; first root- grows
downward (pos.); stems/leaves –grow upward (neg.)
Tool Box #54 continued
C- Thigmotropism = a plants response to touch (coiling
around another plant; roots wrapping around a rock in soil)

1- Plant life is so important to all life on Earth because….
2- Plant life is so important to all life on Earth but….
3-Plant life is so important to all life on Earth so….
Enrichment- Copy and answer:
1- What analogy can be
given to compare
absorption and
transpiration in plants to
absorption and
transpiration in humans?
2- Explain one similarity
and one difference
between plants and
animals with regard to
stimuli ( a thing or event
that evokes a reaction).
