Introduction to reading passages with questions:
Sometimes a passage may be set and students may be
asked to answer a number of questions based on thepassage. They can write good answers only:-
When they fully grasp the meaning of the passage
When they are able to express the meaning of the
passage in their own simple, clear and direct English, and
When they clearly understand the questions asked.
Some Important Hints for reading passages with
questions:
Read the passage carefully two or three times, till you
understand clearly. Ask yourself, What is the main theme
of the passage I am reading? What does the author sayabout the subject? Can I put in a few words the substance
of what s/he says?
Read carefully the questions one by one, and find out
whether you fully understand them.
Now write answers to the questions in your own
words. Do not copy the language of the passage. Theanswers should be brief and to the point.
Revise your answers, and examine them carefully to
see that they are clear and complete. If an answer is too

At last noticing the inconvenience they suffered being
folded in on all sides by lofty hills, he decided that it
would be an excellent thing if the world would be made
easy. For several days he toiled; not even at night did he
cease from exerting his miraculous power; and at last, on
the evening of the fifth day, a dreadful groaning and
rumbling was heard, and one of the hills began to move
slowly away from its neighbours in circle. Soon a huge
gap was revealed and the hill moved steadily on. The
people of the valley were so greatly delighted that without
permission, they unanimously elected Alexander theirchief god. Alexander himself was highly elated at the
success of his efforts. But very soon his pride had a
grievous fall, for he discovered that though he was able to
move the hill, he had not yet acquired sufficient power to
stop it when once it was set in motion. In spite of the most
frantic efforts on the part of Alexander the hill went
majestically on across the plain. Then the hill proceededonward and eventually disappeared into the sea, causing
the highest tide ever reported on those shores and ruined
the fishing trade for two years.

Too much importance must not be attached to the wrong
acts done by children, particularly if they happen to be of
a minor nature. Many boys and girls at a younger age arelikely to be in the habit of stealing, neglecting their
studies, slipping out of their classes, or using bad
language. In nearly every case, the root cause of the
trouble is the fact that proper care of the child is not taken
in the house, or sufficient interest is not shown . But if the
parents are wise, they would correct the faults of their
children by paying more attention to them. Whatever thecase, one thing should never be done. The bad things in
the children should never be repressed, that is, they
should not be compelled to change for the better under

As soon as I entered this fascinating world I was looked
upon with great expectations. The world was full ofracism yet I was held in high esteem. People from the
United States of America to Antarctica looked at me as I
soon rolled out from the parentage of Europeans. Since
economists, raging bulls and bears did not know much
about me, I caught the apprehension of my parents, the
share market holders, the financial experts, scholars,
students and so all. On my birth I was placed on the lap ofmy mother the Federal Bank. Frankly, my brother Lira,
my sister Sterling and my extended family members like
the Deutsche Mark the Yen were quite jealous of me. I
know my worth I reveal this secret of mine hence forth. I
