What Does Six Sigma DMAIC Mean?
DMAIC stands for define, measure, analyze, improve and control. It is the primary way in
which the Six Sigma business management strategy is implemented. Six Sigma is now used
in various business applications and industries. Here is how the strategy is implemented.
Step 1: Definition
Step one is to define the problem, the goal and what the process is going to be. Specific
definition of the problem is necessary in Six Sigma. The problem cannot be alluded to; it
must be defined precisely. For example, it cannot be just poor sales. It has to be something
like a 22% decrease of sales the last three quarters.
Step 2: Measurement
This means measuring and gathering the data needed to influence the process orprocedure.
Step 3: Analysis
Step 3 in the process is analysis. The data that was gathered in step two will now be
evaluated. Methods of analysis include the use of statistical tools. Other tools may be used
depending on the nature of the problem.
Step 4: Improvement
Once the problem is identified, solutions will be proposed. Ways to improve the process willbe implemented too. The improvement and solution will be based on the data analyzed and
collected.
Step 5: Control
The control steps have many elements. These include data gathering and different control
mechanisms. They are needed to ensure the solutions proposed are sustainable. This will
ensure peak performance is delivered. Should there be some target deviations, it will not
turn into defects.
DMADV
DMADV is an acronym for define, measure, analyze, design and verify. It is utilized for
making new designs and processes. The process was created by Dr. W. Edward Deming,
widely credited as the father of quality control.
Deming was also responsible for the setting the DMAIC groundwork. It was his work that
led it to being used as a scientific method for various business processes.
Other Information about Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a methodology aimed at promoting business efficiency. Various methods are
used in the methodology to ensure management is well established.

However, the most common are statistical tools. Majority of the processes are now part of
Sig Sigma application. This will make it easier for businessmen and professionals to
implement the method.
Majority of these methods are classified into two groups. The first are the processoptimization tools. These aid teams in generating effective workflows. The second are the
tools used for statistical analysis. These are required so data can be analyzed accurately.
The methodology is not without its critics, who claim that it is not original. However, it is
held in high regard by many companies.
What these facts about Six Sigma DMAIC show is the importance of data analysis in
companies. It can mean the difference between success and failure.
