Introduction

First Impressions do matter, right?

It is true that the first impression—whether it’s a first meeting with a person or the first sentence of a paper—sets the stage for a lasting opinion.

The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that piques the interest of your readers.

Parts of an Introduction

HOOK

BACKGROUND/GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT TOPIC

THESIS STATEMENT

Page 12: Introductions. Do Now for Tuesday, September 6th: Happy day after Labor Day! Free-write time! Write about a time when you made a good first impression?

Types of Hooks:

1. Narrative/ Anecdote- short story2. Qualifier-famous example3. Statistic- doesn’t have to be exact4. Rhetorical question- meant to get reader to think,

not actually answer.

Goal: One of the most important parts of anything—song, book, movie, television show—is the beginning. As a writer, it is our goal to gain the reader’s trust. In order to gain their trust, we must first gain their interest!

Page 13: Introductions. Do Now for Tuesday, September 6th: Happy day after Labor Day! Free-write time! Write about a time when you made a good first impression?

13

The Hook in Action!

Strategy #1: Narrative (use of personal story)

Example Prompt: In an article for your school newspaper, explain the effects of homelessness on crime rates.

Narrative Hook: Joshua was a straight A student and starting quarterback on his Varsity football team. Joshua had the brightest future imaginable—Ivy League college, fortune, and fame. In a freak accident, Joshua broke his leg, lost his scholarship and job, and was forced to homelessness. Living a life without any resource, Joshua began to steal in order to make it through each day.

How does this look in our introductory paragraph?

Joshua was a straight A student and starting quarterback on his Varsity football team. Joshua had the brightest future imaginable—Ivy League college, fortune, and fame. In a freak accident, Joshua broke his leg, lost his scholarship and job, and was forced to homelessness. Living a life without any resource, Joshua began to steal in order to make it through each day. Homelessness is a state of living that forces people to actions they could have never imagined before. Homelessness has a negative influence on crime resulting in theft, violence, and the sale of illegal substances.

Strategy #2:QualifiersQualifiers: Famous examples to help you make your point.

What if the reader doesn’t know the example you are describing? You must tell them!

For qualifiers, you should include the NAME OF THE FAMOUS EXAMPLE, WHO THEY ARE, AND HOW THEY ARE RELATED TO THE PROMPT!

Sample Prompt: Define courage.

Example: Rosa Parks (Name of famous person), a prominent Civil Rights activist from Montgomery, Alabama (who they are/were), showed courage by refusing to give up her seat for a white man (how they are related to the prompt). When asked to give her seat to the man she firmly resisted saying years later, “it was not even a difficult decision. I just did what I needed to do.”

I just can’t imagine getting on a plane without extreme fear and hesitation.”

Now I write my background-Terrorism is violence against innocent civilians for political purpose.

"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. They're either speaking or preparing to speak. They're filtering everything through their own paradigms, reading their autobiography into other people's lives."  Stephen Covey

"If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person's point of view and see things from his angle as well as your own. "  Henry Ford
