In Germany there are a lot of laws concerning safe working and safe working conditions. They protect workers like a roof over their heads when everybody is aware of their responsibilities.

The employer must make sure that working conditions are suitable for the work being carried out.

The persons in charge of the work place must ensure that all their workers are working safely.

The workers must ensure that they are not endangering themselves or others.

Regulations on the disposal of waste

At the RUB there are strict regulations on the disposal of waste. Ask your supervisor for advice.

Improper disposal of wastes can cause an extremely harmful effect on the environment and result in the payment of high fines.

If you are alone in the building at night or at the weekend and you have an accident, you may not be able to reach a telephone or you may even be unconscious. Nobody will know that you are there until the beginning of the next working day. That may be too late!

If you must work out of working hours please organize this with the head of your department.

Never work alone in the laboratory at night

Occupational Medical ExaminationsSome workplaces at the RUB require special occupational medical examinations to ensure that the employee`s health ist not endangered. This might be the case if you work with pathogenic/toxic/radioactive substances in the lab, in noisy workshops or with animals. Your supervisor will decide what is necessary and you will be invited to the examination by the company doctor.

In addition to this employees working at a workstation/computerare given the opportunity to have their eyes tested by the company doctor.

As soon as you encounter a person that is unconscious confirm that the person can`t respond. Then three things have to happen:

• Call 0234/ 32-23333 and ask them to retrieve an AED at the info-points and to request an ambulance.

• Check for breathing and circulation and begin CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

• Ask persons for help.

AEDs are user-friendly devices and will give you –after turning on power- step-by-step instructions.

Safety engineer and Company Doctor

The Safety Advisor or Safety Engineer has the task of supporting the employer in the field of occupational safety and health and advising on the provision of suitable working conditions.

The Company Doctor also advises on occupational safety but is also responsible for the medical examination of employees with regard to assessing and preventing health hazards associated with their work.

An institution like the RUB must employ a number of Safety Advisors. They have the task of advising everybody at the university who has problems about the safety of their work.

The RUB has Safety Engineers in the Department of Occupational Safety, Health and Enviroment, who will also help you if you have problems with your workplace. Their names are on the next slide.

The Company Doctor will advise you on all health hazards which may arise from or be associated with your work.
