Es una forma de investigación diseñada para ser usada por maestros para tratar de resolver problemas y mejorar las prácticas profesionales en sus propios salones.
Se trata de observaciones sistemáticas y la recopilación de datos que pueden ser luego recopilación de datos que pueden ser luego utilizados por el maestro-investigador en la reflexión, la toma de decisiones y el desarrollo de estrategias de enseñanza más eficaz. (Parsons & Brown, 2002)

La investigación acción es una parte natural de la enseñanza. Los maestros están continuamente observando estudiantes, colectando datos y cambiando su practica para mejorar el aprendizaje de sus estudiantes, el ambiente de su salón y su escuela.
La investigación acción provee un marco que guía las energías del maestro hacia un mejor entendimiento del porque, el cuando y el como los estudiantes se transforman en mejores aprendices.
