Featured Keynote Speakers

The conference planning committee is excited to announce this year’s featured keynote speakers: Dr Kathy Hirsh-Pasek AND Dr William DeMeo. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to experience some of the best in the early childhood industry!

Friday Keynote 9:45 - 11:15 am—Platinum Room Dr Kathy Hirsh-Pasek

Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek is the Stanley and Debra Lefkowitz Faculty Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Temple University where she serves as Director of the Infant Language Laboratory. She is the recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society as well as the American Psychological Association’s American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science, the Great Teacher and the Eberman Research Awards. Kathy received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her Ph.D. at University of Pennsylvania. Her research in the areas of early language development and infant cognition has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and Human Development resulting in 11 books and over

150 publications. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, served as the Associate Editor of Child Development and as treasurer and is on the governing board of the International Association for Infant Studies. Her book, Einstein Never used Flashcards: How children really learn and why they need to play more and memorize less, (Rodale Books) won the prestigious Books for Better Life Award as the best psychology book in 2003.

Playful Learning: How Play Can Motivate Children's Academic and Social Development Yale Professor Ed Zeigler wrote that “play is under siege.” In 1981 40% of a child’s discretionary time was spent in play. By 1997 that time had already decreased to 25%. In the last two decades children have lost 8 hours of free play per week and thousands of schools in the United States have eliminated recess to make time for more academic study (Elkind, 2008). Ironically, our children have not profited from this extra “educational” time, nor from the so-called educational toys. Recent international tests of 14-year olds suggest that we rank 17th among industrialized nations in reading behind Poland and Japan. We rank 30th in math, 13 slots behind Estonia. And in science we stand at a paltry 23rd. Our educational performance has been called a national security risk and a special issue of Newsweek decried that we also suffer from a creativity crisis at the very time that 21st Century skills highlight the need for innovation, flexible thinking and creative innovation. This talk implores us to reexamine the importance of free play and playful learning as a catalyst for developing 21st Century Skills. Using science as a base, I argue that play might offer an important context for growing child’s academic, social and physical well-being. Qualities that spur the global marketplace can be developed in the sandbox where play and playful learning are valued and where children learn in active, engaged and meaningful ways. Play and learning are not incompatible. It is time to escape from the learning illusion that education is solely about memorizing factoids and drilling flashcards. It is time to embrace the way that playful learning can enhance critical skills both in and out of school.

Featured Keynote Speakers

The conference planning committee is excited to announce this year’s featured keynote speakers: Dr Kathy Hirsh-Pasek AND Dr William DeMeo. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to experience some of the best in the early childhood industry!

Saturday Keynote 9:45 - 11:15 am—Platinum Room Dr William DeMeo Dr. William DeMeo is a Developmental Psychologist who serves as a consultant for the Mayerson Academy. In addition, he also has a private practice that specializes in serving children and families that other agencies are not able to serve in the Greater Cincinnati Area. William had coordinated the mental health services for Cincinnati Public Schools’ Early Childhood Program for the past 25 years. A former teacher, he has taught at all levels, from elementary through the university. Finally, William is a National Certified Olweus Trainer, National Association of School Psychologist Approved Provider and a National Consultant for the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention.

Play Matters, It Grows Dendrites! Play should be the heart of every early childhood program. Yet in many of our programs, play is overlooked and undervalued as more pressure is focused on state standards and preparing children for school readiness. Dr. Bill’s passionate, informative and entertaining style empowers you to discover the latest research that will provide the neuroscience connection on the importance of play not only for brain development but also 21st Century Skills. When young children are engaged in play, they are not only learning fundamental concepts that are the basis for later academic learning, but also the precursors of 21 Century Skills that are integrated into the Core Curriculum; communication, problem solving, creativity, collaboration and literacy. Dr. Bill will explore your role as an early childhood professional in using children's play as a vehicle to assess and teach.

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. “ - George Bernard Shaw
