MISSION: Investing in people who make a difference in the campus housing profession worldwide. VISION: To ensure that every person has access to resources of the housing profession and is inspired to invest in its future.

From the ACUHO-I Foundation Chair: Joanne Goldwater Dear ACUHO-I Foundation Friends, Major Donors, Vendors, and Supporters:

I have very mixed emotions as I am writing this update. I am thrilled to report that the Foundation is in excellent financial shape. We have had a very successful year, our volunteers have been working hard, our donors have been remarkably supportive, and we are concluding our 25th anniversary year! It is also hard for me to write this update because it is my final one as the Foundation Board Chair. Rich DeShields at Central Washington University takes over as Chair on January 1, 2014. I

know that the Rich will do a fantastic job in this role. Here are the updates since the post-ACE newsletter: Board Training: The Board was quite busy during our October Board meeting. We met with a representative from the Columbus Foundation, J. Bradley Britton and Terry Schavone, from Cramer & Associates, to learn about planned giving. We also met with the Executive Board to learn about Board Governance from Kevin Kinross of Bricker & Eckler LLP. Finances: At our October Board meeting, we passed the 2014 budget (more info on this can be found later in this newsletter). The Trustees want to be cautious and responsible about retaining a budget buffer given the volatile nature of the investment markets. We also approved a Corporate Major Donor pledge agreement and a Pledge Collection Policy and Procedure SOP. Overall, we currently have $2.3 million in assets. Fundraising: I am so proud of our Parthenon Champions! They raised a total of $28,552 on behalf of our six recipients. Although Sue Beebe’s term as Vice Chair for the Development Committees is coming to an end, she will continue on the Foundation Board as our incoming Chair-elect. The Treasurer position was recently changed from a two-year term to a three-year term. We are delighted that Azfar Mian will continue to serve as our Treasurer. D’aun Green will be joining the Trustees as the new Vice Chair for Development. Congratulations to all three of these valued colleagues! Executive Board Vice Presdient, Allan Blattner, joined the Foundation Board at ACE when Tom Ellett’s term with us ended. Both Tom and Allan have served as excellent liaisons between the two boards. Amy Apointe (Secretary) and Torry Brouillard-Bruce (Vice Chair, Regional Cabinet) will be continuing in their roles for 2014, and I will transition into the Past Chair position. We continue to appreciate the hard work put forth by the Central Office staff. Sallie, Alison, Sheila, Shaun, Karen, and the rest of the staff helped us maintain our financial records, ensured we were properly portrayed on the website, served as outstanding liaisons with our corporate partners, and managed a great deal of behind-the-scenes logistics for us. For the second year in a row, 100% of the Central Office staff donated to the Foundation this year. Talk about dedication! Members of the staff gave us a grand tour of the new building. Moving into the building in January will mark an exciting step forward for the Association. Strategic Planning: In preparation for creating a new Strategic Plan that will dovetail with the Executive Board’s plan, the Foundation did a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis to identify the issues facing our Foundation. We also identified the core values of the Foundation This has been such a satisfying, energizing, positive experience this year! My personal motto, taken from the musical Pippin, is: “Don’t you see I want my life to be something more than long?” As Foundation Chair, I have been given the opportunity to continue to give back to my colleagues, the association, and the profession that I love. I am deeply grateful to all of the Foundation Trustees, the Regional Cabinet, the Development Committee Chairs and committee members, our donors and vendors, and the Central Office; you are all dedicated, hard-working supporters, who exhibited a willingness to give of yourselves (and not just financially). I am proud that each of us made a difference. Giving Back: I became a Major Donor because it is important to me to give back to the people, organization, and profession that I love. The work that we do as Residence Life/Student Affairs professionals impacts the lives of others on a daily basis. I have donated to the ACUHO-I Foundation for 25 years. I became a Major Donor because I want to ensure access to important, needed resources so we can do our jobs better. I also want to leave a legacy and be a role model for others. As a breast cancer survivor, my perspective on many things has changed in the past three years. I focus on the people and things that are truly important to me. As my term as Foundation Chair will soon be ending, I wanted a way to affirm that my passion endures. Joanne Goldwater ACUHO-I Foundation Chair

Major Donor Spotlight:

Tim Johnson Director of Housing & Residence Life, University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Like many of my colleagues, the Housing/Student Affairs profession is truly my home. It has enabled me to work to make a difference in the world one student at a time. It was nearly 20 years ago when I made my first donation to the ACUHO-I Foundation. A colleague pointed out to me how much the profession and specifically my involvement in ACUHO-I had contributed to my life

and once I recognized the truth of that, giving back was a no-brainer. During those first years, it was usually what I had in my pocket at a regional conference, later I started writing checks, sometimes to support a colleague being honored with the Parthenon, often, just an annual contribution to give back. Ironically, it was that same colleague that convinced me to contribute the very first time, asking me to consider being a major donor. Upon reflection, I realized that I have been very blessed to find a profession that I enjoy and feel that I can make a difference. Once again, it was a no-brainer.

Newest Major Donors:

Individual Major Donors: At the 2013 ACE conference, three individuals became new Major Donors, pledging to donate $5,000 over the next five years, three renewed their $5000 pledge for another five years, and all were recognized at a special reception held in their honor.

Our thanks go out to:

Kathy Daley - Coastal Carolina University Peter Galloway (renewed) - West Chester University Joanne Goldwater - St. Mary’s College of Maryland Tim Johnson – University of North Carolina at Greensboro Azfar Mian (renewed) - University of Florida Sandy Schoonover (renewed) - University of Montana

Thank you to these new donors as well as Lori Patterson and the Major Donor Committee members - Brad Shaw, Diane Cline, and Larry Christenson - for their efforts and very generous support.

Corporate Major Donors: Our thanks go out to the newest corporate major donors – EdR and My Favorite Student. These companies committed to a pledge of at least $10,000 per year for five years.

Your Investment in Action:

Featuring STARS graduates, Jenna Decker, Western Illinois University and Betsy Collins, University of Wisconsin- La Crosse.

Jenna Decker Western Illinois University

“Hello! My name is Jenna Decker and I am a senior at Western Illinois University. This summer I had the amazing opportunity of attending STARS College 2013 at the University of Minnesota. I can honestly say that when I left my STARS experience, I felt ready to begin applying for graduate schools. Everything we learned and every

STARS Mentor who took the time to be there was intriguing and passionate about making sure we were ready and knowledgeable about everything from the history of residence halls all the way to what to expect at Placement Exchanges. I also walked away from STARS knowing other students who I will grow up with in this field, which was my favorite part about the entire experience. It makes a huge difference to have other students who are just as passionate about this field as we are. These are the people who will be there for you starting when you begin applying to graduate schools all the way until we graduate! There is no better cohort than your STARS College Class and I am so grateful to have been given this incredible opportunity.” BIO Jenna is a senior at Western Illinois University. She is currently serving as the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Hall (GLACURH) Director, where she is gaining skills that she will be able to utilize in this field. Jenna has started her graduate school application process and is excited to continue her research into all of these incredible programs!

Betsy Collins University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

“It was such a privilege to participate in STARS College with such an incredible group of people. The experience was a constant learning opportunity and something I will forever be grateful for. All of our mentors were willing to share their knowledge and life experiences with us and equally willing to answer our questions. The passion that every student and faculty had for serving other people was inspiring, and reassured me that this was the field I wanted to be in. When we walked into Yudof Hall, where the conference began, we were complete strangers, and by the time we graduated on Saturday it was apparent that we were a united team that would challenge, support and help each other out as we enter the field together. I'm so thankful for the ACUHO-I foundation, Dr. Nick Nicklaus, and everybody else that made this opportunity possible for all of us.”

I Invested Because:

Kari Talik Southeast Missouri State University First $25 for 25 “Institutional” Individual Donor

I Became a $25 for 25 Donor Because: I believe in the Foundation and the Association. The Foundation has given me the

opportunity to be an ACUHO-I Housing Intern. By being an Intern Alumni I can share my experience and opportunities with incoming young professional who I mentor. From my internship experience, I found myself returning back to Southeast Missouri State University (internships host site) after 8 years of being away to work professionally as a member of the Residence Life Leadership team. In addition to just the internship experience there are so many more ways that can benefit ourselves and others by donating. My involvement within the Association has provided me with mentors, colleagues, friends, and opportunity to continue developing both personally and professionally. I decided it was time that I take my contributions to the next level, to honor my mentors and for the future of the Foundation and Association.

Dan Goldman Ecologic Furniture First $25 for 25 “Corporate” Individual Donor

I Became a $25 for 25 Donor Because: Creating a dynamic residence life environment takes work. It requires passion and it

needs commitment. ACUHO-I, through its education programs and robust network, delivers on its mission to help grow future industry leaders. I am proud to share that passion and extend my financial commitment to ACUHO-I to help support these critical endeavors.

Andrew Campbell The University of Arizona $25 for 25 Individual Donor

I Became a $25 for 25 Donor Because: I believe in what we do as a profession and I want to make sure that our profession has

a future. How we continue to have a future is by providing opportunities for undergraduate students

who aspire to have a career in housing and student affairs to learn more about the housing profession

(STARS College) as well as providing newer housing professionals the opportunity to develop the

competencies that will help them move along in their career (NHTI Scholarships). ACUHO-I means a lot

to me, and want to be a part of sustaining our organization to continue to provide the opportunity for

housing professionals to develop and do great things in our field.
