Landscape Photography – the challenges and rewards

Members of the RCH Alumni bring a rich array of talents which served them and the hospital well during their years on staff and which can be developed further after retirement.

This presentation of award-winning images taken in some of the most remote parts of the world will show what professional photographer Gigi Williams (former head of the outstanding RCH Education Resource Centre) and husband Robin Williams (Professor of Photography at RMIT) have been doing since Gigi took early retirement in 2016.

Women in Medicine and a Deeper Understanding of the Hippocratic Oath The first event of the Royal Children’s Hospital Alumni for 2016 will be held on Tuesday 15th March at 1:00 PM in the Vernon Collins Theatre, preceded by lunch at 11:30 AM in the back room (area A) of Café Parkville (formerly Café Adamo, see attached map).

This historical review has its context within the Hippocratic view of medicine. Women’s inclusion in medicine in Australia in greater numbers following the First World War ushered in an era in which the practice of medicine was greatly enriched by their presence. This is reflected in evolving attitudes to the emotional needs of patients and families, especially in paediatric medicine, as well as women’s major contributions to research. The contribution of women to medicine will be the focus of my reflection, with the intention of leaving you with the question as to what are the particular qualities of women that are relevant to this evolution.

Professor Frank Billson AO was previously head of paediatric ophthalmology at the Royal Children’s Hospital and neonatal ophthalmologist at Mercy Maternity Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital. Htis research and clinical interests have had a major focus on neonatal and paediatric ophthalmology. The idea of early intervention and the benefits that early diagnosis and treatment could offer for children and their families was a major interest. During his time at the RCH, the hospital’s expertise in paediatric ophthalmology became internationally recognised. This was followed by appointment as Foundation Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney, establishing the Save Sight Institute and appointments in neonatal and paediatric ophthalmology. He is currently Chairman of the Sight for Life Foundation and a member of the Board of Foresight Australia. Between 1991 and 1999 Frank chaired World Blindness in Children Section WHO Vision 2020 prevention of word Blindness Initiative, signed by all member Nations and launched in 2000.
