Excellence in Vocational Educational and Training.
Eagle Vale High School has a strong and proud record of Vocational
Education and Training. Eagle Vale High School offers students the
opportunity to study VET subjects in Five (5) VET curriculum frameworks
(Certificate II Level) and two Board Endorsed Courses (BEC).
We offer following course at Eagle Vale High School:
Metal & Engineering;
Hospitality (Multiskilling);
Construction (Pathway);
Entertainment;
Business Services;
Sport Coaching (BEC); and
Cert I Manufacturing (Metal Stream) (BEC).
Our focus is to maintain industry standard facilities and equipment in our
learning areas. As such we have recently refurbished the hospitality kitchen
to commercial standard and built a coffee lounge area with the help of VET
Construction students.
One of the key features of our program is the integration of the above VET
framework courses which focus across a range of whole school projects that
enhance the school‘s physical and social environment. One such example is
our VET students‘ learning plan for by undertaking a series of real projects
around the school. These projects include the following:
The VET Entertainment student‘s participation in staging and
providing technical support to our performance art program
throughout the year. This initiative has been implemented and will
continue to expand as we promote our venue and facilities to our
stakeholders and community.
Hospitality students in partnership with support (IO) students
undertake the running of our coffee shop and provide catering
service during major events held at our school on a regular basis
throughout the year.
Construction students undertaking landscape projects, footpaths,
outdoor benches, pergola and tiling of toilets.
Sport Coaching students are planning to work with our Primary
feeder schools to organize sport carnivals during the year.
Eagle Vale High School is considered a highly accomplished provider of
Vocational Education and Training by the industry and business sector in
Campbelltown area. Increasingly VET courses are attracting clientele who
are likely to proceed to further training in Trade at TAFE and with intent to
commence an apprenticeship or traineeship. As a result of participating in
work placement and other aspects of VET programme, students are better
able to decide whether the industry is suited to their particular needs.
The following are examples of achievements to date for Eagle Vale High
School:
Recognition by DEC SWS Region for VET in School Excellence in
Campbelltown region for 2011;
Excellence in Teaching VET award for Campbelltown;
Regional Student winner in Metal & Engineering in 2011;
One of our students in SBAT also received a South Western Sydney
Regional Training Award for encouragement in workplace learning.
10 students were also recognised by MWLP for their outstanding
performance in workplace through ‗Honor Roll‘.
Completed building refurbishment for Creative and Performing Arts and
Multipurpose Entertainment Hall.
Successful bid for Federal Government funding to refurbish Metal and
Engineering Trade Training Centre facilities.

From the Principal Mr. Duncan
The year has started well with very few changes in staff and a series
of major new programs that are being implemented that are
innovative and exciting and that will result in a major transformation
of our school.
The Student Representative Council has started the year with a
planning and leadership conference organised by Mr Rix. This year
the SRC will have four portfolio areas and will have a budget of
$5000 to support school improvements with the opportunity to make
requests for a further $19,000. One portfolio area will look after the
built environment and this group will work in partnership with the
building and construction class to make improvements to such areas
as the student toilets. Some work will be undertaken by commercial
contractors. A second group will be responsible for the positive be-
haviour and learning portfolio and will be involved in talking to their
peers on assemblies and year meetings on expectations for our three
school rules. Show respect, best work and be safe.
A new exciting program for our school is a link with the Beacon
Foundation a charitable organisation that provides career support
programs for year 10 students. The Foundation has a range of large
companies that sponsor its initiatives. The program includes such
initiatives as mock interviews with all year 10 students having an
interview with representatives from industry. I anticipate that our link
with Beacon will be for a minimum of five years and I look forward
to links being developed with the support of Beacon with the
hospitality, building, metals and performing arts industries.
Our performing arts programs go from strength to strength with a
range of new initiatives that are highlighted in this newsletter
including employing a school learning support officer to work as a
sound engineer one day a week to run our new recording studio. So
far two recordings have been substantially completed one has been
done by members of the year 12 music class and one by year 11 class.
The year 12 cohort from 2011 performed well both in academic and
vocational courses. Our highest performing students were Kathryn
Nocera who received a High Achievers Award at the Campbelltown
Council Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 22 February.
Kathryn will start her studies in law at Western Sydney University
this week. Kathryn received a band 6 in Geography and legal studies
and band 5 in all her other subjects.

On Monday 5 March 2012 a Priority Schools
(PSP) survey was sent home to all families in
Years 7, 8, and 9. Completing the survey gives
EVHS an opportunity to be considered for extra
funding and staffing for our school for the next
four years (2013—2016). We are striving for a
100% return. We look forward to your support in
this activity.

Design An Ad Education Project
Eagle Vale High School had a very
successful Term 4 in 2011 with Year 9
Art student Mikaela Hinds taking out
the prestigious Design An Ad
Education Project with the local
Macarthur Campbelltown Advertiser.
Through the process of designing an
advertisement, from concept to client
to publication, students were able to
gain an insight into local businesses
which connect to a broad new
audience and the readers of the
newspaper got to see the creative work
of talented art students from the local
area. The project required students to
create an advertisement for a local
business which had agreed to sponsor
the school. The advertisement had to
be hand drawn and sent to the sponsor
business for short listing. Mikaela submitted an outstanding entry and took
out first prize in the High Schools section. For her efforts Mikaela received
$500 and the school received $600 for which will certainly be put to good use
purchasing resources for the school. The staff and students from Eagle Vale
High School are very proud and would like to congratulate Mikaela for her
brilliant work and her fantastic dedication to the Visual Arts, keep up the
great work!!
Great Success at Volleyball
Volleyball at Eagle Vale has kicked off already for 2012 with both boys and
girls inter-zone championships being held early in Term 1. Eagle Vale had
good representation in the Fisher zone representative teams with 12 players in
both competitions. The Fisher zone girls team finished equal 2nd in the
tournament just missing out on defending their title from 2011. The boys team
also finished 2nd with outstanding wins over the fancied Westfields and
Lansdowne zones. Special mention must be given to John Ioane, Kome
Ualesi and Primo Vaipapa who made the Sydney South West team to play
in the state championships later this year in Taree. Well done to all players for
their consistent efforts and we look forward to more pleasing results in the
upcoming state knockout competitions.

High Achieving Student Programs 2012
The high achieving strategy was introduced in the school five years
ago. All Year 6 students who are in area for our high school are given
the opportunity to sit for a test each year and the class is then selected
based on the academic results from this test as well as their academic
progress in Year 6.
In 2012 the high school is enriching this program by providing
opportunities for students to mentor primary students when they are
writing the librettos for their operas.
HAS students are also going to be involved in mentoring students
from Year 6 in some Science and Maths lessons. Different students
will be chosen to work with our four feeder primary schools Kearns,
Eschol Park, Claymore and Blairmount on each of these projects to
ensure that students don‘t miss out on too much of their normal work.
These opportunities will give students significant leadership skills in
team work as well as enhancing their literacy and creative writing
skills.
The Year 9 HAS class will be involved in an innovative research
project documenting the history of Claymore and the greater area of
Campbelltown.

Community of Schools Opera Ed. Project 2012 Sponsored by Graeme Wood - the founder of wotif.com.
Eagle Vale HS is proud to present the Year 6 Opera Ed. Project. This is
a primary links project designed to promote student leadership in our
high school students who will be acting as mentors and leaders of
learning to their primary peers.
Year 6 students from Blairmount PS; Claymore PS; Eschol Park PS
and Kearns PS will attend our school for 5 full days each during week
6 to week 10 of this term. They will write, develop and perform their
own individual Opera!
The students will perform these operas in our newly refurbished
school hall on Tuesday 27 March 2012 starting at 6pm.

Report from Senior Leadership Group and SRC
The SRC are about to undergo its annual renewal – elections will be held
in the week of 5 March when the new SRC will join with the Senior
Leadership Group to continue the sterling efforts so far exhibited this year.
Reflecting the current School Plan, the Senior Leadership Group (SLG)
and SRC are undergoing a major restructure and reorientation.
The restructure has resulted in a more activist SLG-SRC which deals with
real issues and takes initiatives to resolve them. There are now four
portfolio groups:
School Visual Environment
Recycling and Energy Efficiency
Positive Behaviour and Improved Learning
Performing and Creative Arts & Primary Discos
Using discussion points developed in small group meetings in late 2011,
students discussed the role of each portfolio at a full-day SLG-SRC
Conference held in February 2012. They resolved that each Portfolio
Group would be made up of some SRC members and at least two SLG
members. The closest approximation to the new structure is a Government
Ministry!
The Conference also discussed SLG-SRC Finances, Communication
Strategy and meeting procedures.
Ms Phoebe Drake, President of Sydney University SRC addressed the
Conference. Ms Drake stressed the need for members of the SRC to take
their role as student representatives very seriously indeed. She told us that
she had been an active member of her own school SRC (Inverell High
School) and this had been a solid foundation for her life at Sydney
University.
In short, the SLG-SRC is working towards becoming a more
―professional‖ organisation which is able to take the initiative and
genuinely represent students‘ real issues and needs.
This professionalisation will be further enhanced as the 2012 SRC
elections are held.
The 2012 election will have the same form as a State or Federal election,
having a formal declaration of vacancies, call for nominations to fill the
vacancies, election campaigning, voting, SLG participation in the count, a
formal declaration of the vote and a formal establishment of the new SRC.
The work which the current SLG-SRC has begun so well will be continued
throughout 2012. It‘s something to look forward to!
Stephen Rix, HSIE Faculty, SRC Coordinator
What’s Going on in Music? Eagle Vale High School has a host of new facilities and equipment for the
use of our Performing Arts students, including a state of the art recording
studio. As a result, Eagle Vale High School is employing Mr. Mitch
Gilmore one day a week to operate the new recording studio. This will
give our students the opportunity to record their music and further develop
their talents in the performing arts. Mitch is an experienced recording engi-
neer and has worked with some of the ―Big Names‖ at most of the major
venues in Sydney. Work has already begun on recording Moria Perenise
and Boaz Tupuola‘s Year 10 graduation song composed in 2011.
We also have a number of students involved in a performance of ―New Art
Music:‖ at the Campbelltown Performing Arts Centre in May. The
composition was composed by Professor Greg Schiemer. He and his
assistants, vocal coach and singer with the Wot Opera program, Dr. Lotte
Latukefu and Lecturer in Theatre Dr Janis Hayes (both from Wollongong
University), will be coming into the school to help our students prepare for
the performance.
The preparations are underway for the staging of the Eagle Vale High
School Rock Opera. Yes, our students will actually be writing the script
and composing the music. Performances will be held during week 8 of
Term 2. Murray and Ben from the Wot Opera will be coming in to help
with this project, and there are quite a few members of staff involved.
The Eagle Vale High School Choir has started up again this year. The
student roll up has been good, but there is always room for more. Mr. Tim
Gwan has come on board to help with the choir, the Rock Opera and the
teaching of our stage 5 music programs.
We have been pleased with the number of music performances students
have been doing at Eagle Vale High School. Our music students are ably
assisted and supported by students in Mr Law‘s Entertainment classes who
take care of all the technical aspects of these performances.
We have been videoing most of the students‘ performances and they have
been uploaded to the ―Eagle Vale High‖ You Tube channel. It is definitely
worth going to www.youtube.com to look at them, the URL is:
