INVITATION

The municipalities of Ørsta and Volda are situated on the west coast of Norway. Combined we have app. 20 000 inhabitants and more than 50 choirs! Local choirs now have the pleasure to invite you to Nordic Choir Festival in collaboration with Foreningen Norden, Norway’s Choir Association and Ørsta Tourist Board the spring of 2018.

We hope to have visitors from choirs in our twin towns (Nurmes/Lieksa, Møn/Vordingborg and Laholm) and from other Nordic and Baltic choirs!

Program:

Wednesday May 16th: Arrival for choirs that would like to participate at the local 17th of May celebration the next day.

Thursday May 17th: Visiting choirs are welcome to participate at the 17th of May celebrations together with a local “host” choir. We will make a program for each choir based on their wishes.

Arrival / check in throughout the day.

Friday May 18th: 10.00 am-3.00 pm: Choose between several workshops, and your find favourite. Alternatively, join guided activities/tours.

All visiting choirs are welcome to do a concert together with a local host choir this evening. Your hosts will arrange a dinner, and there will be plenty of time for socializing!

Saturday May 19th: 10.00 am-3.00 pm: Choose between several workshops, and your find favourite. Alternatively, join guided activities/tours.

5.00 pm: Concert with presentation of the «results» from the work shops and also the pre rehearsed, common repertoire.

8.00 pm: Gala dinner and dancing.

Sunday May 20th: Choirs are welcome to sing during the Sunday church service or to do open air concerts.

We also offer a variety of guided activities and trips for choirs that want to stay until next day. Departure Sunday and Monday.

Join the Choir Festival!

Exciting workshops: Choose between several different workshops lasting 1 or 2 days. We emphasize professional input, Nordic themes and inspiring instructors. There will be held a separate choirmaster’s workshop.

Concerts to present your own repertoire One evening we will arrange several small concerts with two choirs preforming at each concert – one local choir and one gest choir. The local choir will be your host and arrange a dinner for you after the concert.

Big concert with all the choirs & gala dinner Magnificent singing and delicious food! Dance until late at night, while Faculty of Funk is playing!

Many nice trips and adventurers are awaiting! We can offer both a nice 17th of May program and guided tours in a landscape dominated by fjords and mountains.

Workshops Workshop A: “Choral buffet” with Per Oddvar Hildre Per Oddvar”Prots” Hildre has great knowledge of choral music from different cultures op periods. In the workshop titled "choral buffet" the participants encounter a mixed repertoire with “tastes” from different styles: Folk, Latin American, Persian, gospel and jazz. Prots will make this a memorable journey! Suitable for all singers and conductors.

Workshop B: Singer’s course The festival's big singer’s course covers a lot: Song technique, play and improvisation. W focus on Nordic folk music and popular music. We explore the voice and we explore singing in small ensemble and we create an exciting, innovative and fun song project for the joint concert - this is a happy and energetic experience! Frank Havrøy is responsible for this workshop. He is an experienced singer and educator, and he is part of the group Nordic Voices. Here he also collaborates with skilled local musicians/singers with backgrounds from various genres: Morten Bollerud, Runa Godøy Seter, Bjorn Holum and Øyvind Granden Berg. Suitable for all singers and conductors who want to learn new musical and vocal techniques and methods

Workshop C: Summer songs and lullabies from the Nordic and Baltic countries The goal of this workshop is to explore the Nordic and Baltic musical «treasure chest» through learning summer songs and lullabies from nine countries. We will work with the lyrics and the languages, and explore different musical moods in a beautiful and varied repertoire. Suitable for both singers who can read notes and conductors wanting to expand their repertoire. The workshop will present a Nordic panel of conductors and composers bringing their own favourites. You can also bring your favourite summer song or lullaby! Ketil Grøtting will be responsible for the workshop. He is a conductor graduated from the Norwegian Music Academy and is now the conductor of the Ørstakoret.

And more… The list is not complete yet. This spring we will send you more information about our workshops. There will also be arrangements for conductors. Languages used: Norwegian/Nordic, English and the universal language we all use when we sing!

Get to know Ørsta/Volda:

The workshops and concerts take place within a frame of two days. We suppose you wish to sing as much as possible, but if you would like a little break, we also offer you a variety of alternative activities that take place simultaneously with the workshops. These activities are also perfect for companions that are not member of the choirs themselves. We can offer guided walks and hikes, boat trips, bus trips, visits to museums and more. In addition to this, we are happy to make tailored programs if you tell us your wish good some time in advance. The day before the festival starts, we offer everybody to join the local 17th of May celebration. Tell us if you want to come early, and we will make a program for you according to your choir’s wishes. If you like you can join the parade, we can order lunch and dinner for you and we can fix tickets for the traditional concert in the evening. Sunday 20th of May probably means departure for many of you. You may, however, choose stay one day extra. In this case, we will help the choir to make a program. Perhaps you would like to perform in a church during the religious service or do an open air concert? - Or maybe you want to go on a trip? A list of excursions and activities, including prices and detailed information, will be sent to you later this spring.

How to get here & accomodation

Choose between alternative accommodation: Private accommodation: Free Cabin, basic: From NOK 150 per person per night (breakfast not included) Cabin, upgraded: From NOK 300 per person per night (breakfast not included) Bed & Breakfast From NOK 400 per person per night Hotel From NOK 800 per person per night The nearest airport is Volda Ørsta Airport Hovden with several daily flights to/from Oslo and Bergen. Ålesund Airport Vigra is another good alternative with many daily flights to/from Oslo, Bergen and other towns. We arrange transportation from the airport.

Prices for participating at the Festival:

Costs for other activities, like guided tours, will come in addition.

We ask choirs that are interested in participating at the Festival to contact us before April 17th. Please note that this is not a binding registration! If you contact us will send you a detailed program around May 1st and the deadline for registration is June 1st 2017. Please, use e-mail to reply or if you have any questions!

PLEASE NOTE!! If you register before May 15th 2017 the festival fee is reduced to NOK 200.
