    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

    1.1. Background

Geological map is the start of every preliminary assessment for works related to the

exploitation of the Earth mining, civil engineering, oil and gas industry. For the latter,

geological mapping is the firstmost clue showing a regional chance for any hydrocarbon

accumulation. Furthermore, it shows surficial geological information that leads petroleum

company to visit outcrops and to plan further subsurface data acquisitions. While Indonesia is

known for its oil and gas potential, the common Indonesian petroleum play is usually

challenging with young volcanic-influenced sediments undergoing heavy structural stress.

Hence, Indonesia is a good place to train the next-level geological mapping skilll along with a

greeting to more complex petroleum play research. Not mentioning the vast tourism attraction

of the archipelago, this competition also acts as the promotor for Indonesian geotourism.

In the spirit of accelerating students skill of geological mapping, since 2011 the Student

Union of Geological Engineering UGM has established the Geomapping Competition and acts as

the pioneer of such competition in Indonesia. The aim of this competition is to become a

facilitator for geologist candidates to practice and apply their knowledge about geology and

geoscience in fields and explain it trough geological map. in the other hand, this competition

mean in order to consolidate brotherhood union of Asia-Pasific geological students andsimultaneously introduce Indonesian tourism and culture to whole world.

The 2013 International Geomapping Competition targets geology departements of Asia

Pacific universities. It adopts the theme: Historia geologia est potentia (geological History as

Power) and scheduled in December 2013 and take location in Yogyakarta and fieldwork area.

The competition consists of 3 (three) parts: opening and preparation located in Yogyakarta, 3-

day fieldwork and presentation, judgement , closing session, and tourism located back in

    Yogyakarta.

    1.3. Previous Geomapping Experiences

The vision of bringing the Geomapping into international level is supported by the

success of two previous National Geomappings, as follows:

Geomapping Competition 2011is a part of 49thHMTG FT UGM Dies Natalies series. A

national degree competition that held in 27thNovember 2011 until 3rdDecember 2011 in Bayat,

Klaten, Central Java. Led by Gusti Faisal Ismawan. Joining this competition as participants are:

Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran, Institut Teknologi

Bandung, Institut Teknologi Adi Tama Surabaya, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nasional, Universitas

Padjajaran, Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Sains dan Teknologi Jayapura, Universitas

Jenderal Soedirman, Universitas Hasanuddin, and Universitas Trisakti. Members of the jury inthis competition are: Salahuddin Husein S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. (professor of Geological Engineering

UGM); Prof. Dr. Ir. Sutikno Bronto (volcanologist); and Dr. Ir. Munasri (geology professional).

Geomapping Competition 2012is a part of Lustrum X HMTG FT UGM series. It was held

on 24thNovember 2012 until 1stDecember 2012 in Sermo Dam areas, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.

Led by Atma Galih Dharmawan. Joining this competition as participants are: Universiti

Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran,

Institut Teknologi Bandung, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nasional, Universitas Padjajaran,

Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, and Universitas Trisakti. Judges in this

competition are: Dr. Akmaludin Thalib S.T., M.T. (professor of Geological Engineering UGM); Ir.

Sukmandaru M.Sc. (mining professional); and Ir. H. Seno Aji M.Sc., M.AppSc (IAGI Secretary

    CHAPTER II

    GEOMAPPING DETAILS

    2.1. Theme

Historia geologia est potentia / Geological History as Power

Geological map is the start of every preliminary assessment for works related to the

exploitation of the Earth mining, civil engineering, oil and gas industry. For the latter,

geological mapping is the firstmost clue that shows a regional chance for any hydrocarbon

accumulation. Furthermore, it shows surficial geological information that leads petroleum

company to visit outcrops and to plan further subsurface data acquisitions. Therefore,

geological history understanding is of a great power for energy-search successfulness.

    2.2. Date & Location

    Date : December 3rd12th, 2013

Location : Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (Venue)

    Fieldwork Area

    2.3. Competition Concept

The 2013 International Geomapping Competition is the annual international geological

mapping competition that challenges best geological undergraduate students all over ASEAN

and neighbor countries such as Japan, Taiwan, China and India. They will compete to make the

most comprehensive and accurate geological map possible, then briefly assess the petroleum

    potential of the area.

The 2013 International Geomapping Competition targets geology departements of Asia

Pacific universities. Delegates are 1 team of 3 students per university. The competition consists

of 3 (three) parts: opening and preparation located in Yogyakarta, 3-day fieldwork, and

presentation, judgement , closing session, and tourism located back in Yogyakarta.
