The CommunityRedmond, Washington is a thriving, cul-turally diverse community with more than 69,900 residents who enjoy the Pacific Northwest’s year-round outdoor playground. Redmond is at the center of everything: moun-tains, water, and endless evergreens. Located just 11 miles northeast of downtown Seattle, Redmond’s diverse employment base includes more than 87,000 jobs in a variety of fields such as: technology, aerospace, gaming, biomedical as well as innovative start-ups. Housing options range from stately single-family suburban homes, to modern, multi-family complexes in the City’s two growing urban centers. The City maintains an excellent record for public safety and includes several award-winning schools, a great park system, an emphasis on quality development, and a commitment to protecting the natural environment. These attributes combined, offer an excellent quality of life for the people who live and work in Redmond. In 2019, Money Magazine named Redmond as one if the Top 100 Best Places to Live in America. The City ranked twelfth in the nation based on economic strength, quality health care, low crime, great schools, and a great variety of recreation opportunities.

The OrganizationRedmond has a strong Mayor/Council, non-partisan form of government. Seven Council Members and the Mayor, all representing the community at large, are each elected directly by the people for staggered four-year terms. The City Council adopts the City’ biennial budget, establishes law and policy, approves appropriations and contracts, and levies taxes and grants franchises. The Mayor appoints the Fire Chief and all other Directors. Like other department heads, the Fire Chief is an at-will employee and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor. The Fire Chief is a part of the Mayor’s Directors Team, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Together, the Mayor and Directors Team lead the City to strategically achieve the community’s desired vision which is reflected in the following priorities:

• Healthy and Sustainable: We value a healthy environment that supports an active community through environmental preservation responsibly balanced with growth, climate action goals achieved through green practices and policies, and places and programs that support an active and involved community.

• Safe and Resilient: We value a thriving com-munity where all people feel safe through effec-tive emergency pre-vention strategies, well-executed emer-gency responses, and comprehen-sive investigations

that provide appropriate resolu-tions.

• Vibrant and Connected: We val-ue a well-planned and supported community that provides a sense of place through a transportation system that supports multi-modal movement of people and goods, city services and programs that enhance quality of life and commu-nity prosperity, and City services and future growth facilitated by high-quality public infrastructure and facilities.

• Strategic and Responsive: We value a City that is welcoming, service oriented, fiscally respon-sible, and where leadership aligns community needs with strategic planning and City operations.

The DepartmentThe Redmond Fire Department (RFD) is dedicated to continuously protect and preserve life and property through quality education, prevention, disaster preparedness, and rapid emergency response within the City of Redmond and King County Fire District 34 as well as ALS responses throughout all Northeast King County.

The 2019-2020 biennial budget of $67.3 million is comprised of $49.9 million from the General Fund/Levy, $15.2 million from King County to provide Advanced Life Support ser-vices throughout Northeast King County, and $2.2 million is in support of Sound Transit’s light rail expansion and Microsoft’s campus refresh project. Additionally, Redmond receives $15.1 million to support Fire District 34. RFD has a staff that includes 171 full-time equivalent employees, most of which belong to recognized unions representing two CBAs. While the Fire Chief is responsible for strategic oversight and leadership of the

Fire Suppression: Re-spond to threats to life safety, property, and environment utilizing aid cars, fire engines, ladder trucks, and command vehicles.

Emergency Medical Services: Firefighter/EMTs/Paramedics respond to medical emergencies and provide basic and advanced life sup-port. This includes ALS responses throughout 250 square miles in the cities of Duvall, Kirkland, Redmond, Woodinville and unincorporated portions of King County servicing a population of over 170,000 citizens.

Fire Prevention: Administer fire and life safety maintenance inspection program, enforce the International Fire Code, including inspections, permitting, record keeping, and compliance for all occupancies in the City except single family residences, and conduct investigation of fires and related emergencies.

Emergency Management: Partner with the organization and community to provide useful and universally accessible means of readiness, response, and recovery to all hazards.
