Several years ago, The Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church re-ceived a nickname—Gather. This nickname is appropriate as the Annual Meet-ing gives local Covenant Churches a chance to Gather with one another to wor-ship God, celebrate what God has done, discern future direction, and so much more. Sure, the Annual Meeting has its business meeting portions—Robert’s Rules of Order and all—but imbedded in these portions was the occasional joke. To begin our meeting moderator Sam Chang pulled out not only a standard gavel to preside over the meeting but also a Thor sized hammer, just in case we got unruly. Here are a few highlights of the 132nd Annual Meeting of the ECC from my perspective:
Welcomed nine churches into membership including one in our own Midwest Conference: Pan Y Vino Covenant Church of Overland Park, Kansas.
Gave input on the character and qualifications we’d like to see in a new Presi-dent of North Park University. (President David Parkyn retired after 11 years in the role.)
Approved the calls of three North Park Theological Seminary professors, in-cluding two professors I had in seminary: Hauna Ondrey and Elizabeth Pierre.
Scot Gillian (Pastor Kelly’s father) along with 20 other individuals were recog-nized with Clergy Lifetime Service awards.
Recognition of a newly established mission region: Middle East/North Africa (MENA). Missionaries and partners in MENA will help refugees, persecuted Christians, engage with Muslim neighbors, and seek peace.
Kicked off a new project called Launch 50 seeks to acquire and renovate homes for community families using local skills and labor in the city of Detroit.
The pilot project, which took place in Dolton, Illinois (where I interned last summer) was featured in last month’s Covenant Companion magazine. Also, available online. Search “No Place Like Home” on at covenantcom-panion.com.
If you’re interested in reading more, I encourage you to pick up a copy of the Del-egate Summary on the back table or download it online. You can also still watch some portions of the meetings online at gather.covchurch.org.
Thank you for making it a priority for your pastor and delegates to attend the An-nual Meeting each year. Not every church makes it a priority and not every church is financially able to send their pastor or a delegate. Larger Covenant events like this give me an opportunity to worship without worrying about preach-ing a sermon or what I’m going to say in the next prayer. These events also give me a chance to connect with family and colleagues, to be encouraged and chal-lenged by them, and to steal ideas from them. Attending Gather was also per-sonally meaningful for me this year as I had the opportunity to watch my father lay hands on my brother as he was ordained to word and sacrament.
As Annette can now attest, it is one thing to hear about Gather, it is another thing to experience it. Mark your calendar for June 21st through 23rd and consider rep-resenting Wakefield at Gather ’18: The 133rd Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A Little About Us . . .
Hi! We are Julie and Mike Couch and we live in Norfolk, Nebraska. By the type of music we play, you know that we are sup-porters of classic country music and coun-try gospel. You will also hear a bit of country folk and western tunes as all of these styles tend to influence each other and are what make them the favorites they are today. You'll experience a bit of family friendly humor between us as well. I mean come on, we are married, and there's nothing funnier than life! Right?

While we are sure to have much fun we are praying and hoping for God to reveal himself in a new way to all of us as we work together to care for His people.
We would like to invite you to pray with us for safe travels, strong bodies and open hearts to how God wants to use us and to what he de-sires to teach us.
We also want to thank St. Johns, Salem Lutheran, Wakefield Evangelical Covenant, and Our Savior’s Church for their gracious financial support in helping us to take this trip.
Sunday July 16th we will have a prayer blessing for this group at Covenant Church at 10:00 am and at Salem Lutheran at 10:30 am.

Phase 3: Access to Clean Water
In the current CCI update issue we learn that the latest projects are focused on working with the CCI communities to provide clean water for their people. It is a precious resource that many have little ac-cess to for a variety of reasons. Many Congolese suffer from water borne illnesses due to lack of clean water.
You can pick up a copy of the current Congo Clinic Initiative Quarter-ly Update at church or go to www.paulcarlson.org/cci-updates. While we continue to learn more and raise funds for these projects Renée N. Hale (PCP Executive Director) asks that we please be in prayer for the following:
Medical leaders who will meet with communities about health, hygiene, and the water source
Communities’ commitment to own and maintain the water source
People seeing real change to their health due to clean water Leaders who will care for the water source on a long term
basis and train others to do the same
Barbara & Steve Swanson Back in Action Barbara & Steve made their way to Sweden June 28th. While they may be in new place, they will continue their work with refugees. We continue to support them financially as a church but more importantly we lift them up in prayer that God will bless many through them with His peace, grace and love.
Impact Detroit Reflection by Annette Chase
Impact Detroit was a two-day mission experience which happened in the days preceding Gather 2017, the Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Impact Detroit was created for people to go into the hard areas of Detroit and make a difference for the people who live in those places. Funny thing about the name “Impact Detroit”-- I went expecting to have an impact on the people I was serving but really, they had more of an impact on me than I did on them. I worked in an area called Brightmore. The minister of the church told us that Brightmore was THE poorest neighborhood around. Most of the people lived on approximately $7,000 a year. Seven-thousand dollars A YEAR! That breaks down to $583.33 a month and $19.45 a day! He said some of the people might keep wood to burn as they don’t
have electricity or heat. Working to clean up the grounds of the church and the park that are owned by the church, I saw many people stop by to take advantage of the var-ious services that were being offered during those two days. Services con-sisted of free dental care, diabetic sugar screenings, blood pressure checks, and mammograms as well as a mobile library and an employment agency to help people apply for jobs. They were also fed a meal. They were the poor-est people in the area but they were also so grateful to see so many people who came to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. City Covenant Church of Brightmore is doing amazing things in the face of incredible adversity. City Covenant Church understands Isaiah’s words from Isaiah 61:1.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to go and show the love of Jesus with labor and compassion.
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
”
Isaiah 61:1

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7
