    0-13-277542-5First or second edition of this text will suffice for content. NOTE: Problems differ between editions.

    Course Objective and Outcomes

    Objective: Understand and apply basic principles of engineering economics in order to make informedeconomic decisions.

    Outcomes: Students will learn to

    1. Gain understanding of the time value of money, simple and compound interest, and the impact ofdifferent compounding frequencies

    2. Represent the time flow of money using cash flow diagrams and understand economic equivalence

    3. Apply concepts of present value and future value, and understand and apply interest formulas foruneven payment series, equal payment series, linear and geometric gradient payment series

    4. Become familiar with equivalence calculations under inflation and the conversions between actuaand constant dollars

    5. Demonstrate ability to solve interest problems for different types of loans and investments

    6. Show ability to apply present worth analysis and annual equivalent analysis for assessing projectproposals

    7. Demonstrate understanding of economic principles and ability to apply them to assessing engineeringproposals, investments, loan payment schedules, and effects of inflation

    9. Work effectively in teams

    Attendance

    Attendance will be taken via MCard. Swipe your MCard at the beginning of every lecture. You will becounted as absent if you do not swipe your MCard before the end of break each lecture.

    Homework

    There will be five homeworks. Homework is due via CTools submission as a single PDF. Four of the fivehomeworks will be used in calculation of your course grade. Thus, no late homeworks will be accepted forany reason. Each homework will be graded out of five points based on correctness and showing appropriatework. The sum of the four homeworks will determine your total homework score.

    Examinations

    Students will not be allowed to make-up a missed exam without prior consent or a doctors letter certifyingillness at the time of the exam. If you are ill the morning of an exam, you must provide documentationfrom health services in order to reschedule your taking of the exam. If you have an unavoidable conflictwith an exam, notification is required by January 18, 2013 so that alternate arrangements may be madefor you.

    Any student requiring special accommodations during exam time should contact the instructor by January18, 2013 so that adequate arrangements may be made.

    The midterm will be held in-class Tuesday, February 5, 2013. The exam is closed book and closed notes.You will be allowed one side of a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper on which you may handwrite any mate-rial.

    The final exam will be held in-class Thursday, February 26, 2013. The exam is closed book and closednotes. You will be allowed both sides of a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper on which you may handwrite anymaterial.

    Project

    A group project will be assigned Friday, February 8, 2013.

    You may select your own group by emailing the GSI ([email protected]) by Friday, February 1, 2013with a list of team members. This email should list each team member by their full name, unique nameand student ID number. Groups cannot exceed 3 members. If you do not submit a group request, you wilbe considered to be working alone.

    The group project will be due via CTools submission on Friday, March 1, 2013.

    Regrade Policy

    If you believe there was an error in the grading of your homework or exam, you have one week after thereturn of your homework or exam to submit a written request explaining why you feel points were unfairlydeducted. Note that any homework or exam submitted for regrading is subject to a full regrade; thereforepoints may be added or subtracted.

    Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the CTools Forums to discuss the homework prob-lems and learn from other students.

    The instructor will only reply to emails related to course material and administrative issues, not

    homework. We will try to respond to any emails within 24 hours.

    Submissions to CTools should include your unique name as part of the file name, e.g. schellg HW3.pdf

    Engineering Honor Code

    All students are bound by the College of Engineering Honor Code. Violations of the honor code will bereported to the Honor Council. Penalties, if guilt is established, range from letter grade reductions toexpulsion from the University of Michigan.
