The relocation of South Sudanese refugees from the flooded camps of Leitchuor and Nip Nip to Jewii was successfully completed. On this operation, which started on 08 May 2015, a total of 47,085 refugees, 44, 859 from Leitchour and 2,226 from Nip Nip were relocated to Jewii camp.
From this total 612 were vulnerable refugees airlifted from Leitchour by a helicopter supplied by UNHCR with IOM medical escort on board. 523 of the refugees were airlifted between
Between eight and 31 May while the remaining 89 were relocated between the first and third June.
A large convoy of 70 busses and 10 trucks were deployed by IOM for the operation which relocated 47,085 refugees in 27 days.
In the mean time, a large number of refugees continue to cross the border into Pagak entry point. After the Administration for Refugee and Returnee Afairs (ARRA) conducted a count, it was identified that there are 6,100 refugees; 4,600 in Pagak and 1,500 in Akobo awaiting relocation to safe camps.
IOM is closely following up with ARRA and UNHCR on the extension of the Pugnido camp. Once the preparation is finalised, IOM will resume the evacuation assistance from the entry points.
IOM will resume the relocation from the Pagak
and Akobo entry points to Pugnido after consultation with ARRA and UNHCR that the extension of the camp is completed. Currently Pugnido is hosting 43,000 refugees and when the extension is complete, an additional 20,000 will be accommodated.
In addition to the border evacuation and relocation, IOM has also continued the construction of shelters to assist 24,000 refugees (4,000 households) in Kule refugee camp in Gambella to enhance protection from harsh weather conditions and environments. 650 Shelters have already been handed over to beneficiaries and 1,811 are under construction.
Partnerships and Coordination
IOM closely collaborates with the Government of Ethiopia’s ARRA, UNHCR and humanitarian partners on the ground to respond to this emergency. IOM is also coordinating health referrals and care with the Ministry of Health, WHO, UNHCR, UNFPA, IFRC, UNICEF, WFP, IMC, ARRA, ACF, MSF‐F as well as regional hospitals.
Challenges
Security threats continue to challenge access to some camps in Benishangul‐ Gumuz.
Refugees’ concerns about relocation to different refugee camps.
