Many internally displaced persons (IDPs) are fleeing violence and so leave suddenly, bringing little with them. Most IDPs are living in situations where aid is desperately needed, sleeping in unfinished buildings and mosques, or staying with relatives. IOM distributes items such as mattresses, stoves and soap in response to these needs. As winter approaches, IOM also distributes heaters and blankets. Rapid assessment and response teams (RART) assess the needs of IDPs and respond by distributing NFI kits where they are needed, security permitting. IOM is responding to life-threatening needs in a rapidly changing environment, in addition to monitoring the situation on the ground. IOM Iraq plans to contribute to the overall UNAMI strategy for winter by providing winterized non-food item (NFI) kits and shelter. As of 20/10, IOM has distributed 4,350 winterized NFI kits containing among other non-weather specific items, kerosene heaters, carpets, thick blankets and plastic sheeting.
