STORY IDEA November 2, 2009

With the end of daylight savings time this weekend, the days are growing shorter as we head to winter. Along with it, people will start suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is caused by light deprivation. SAD can exacerbate stress for couples and families who are already experiencing conflict in their relationships.  And, the approach of the holidays can also be very stressful.

This is a time of year when couples could benefit from counseling from competent family therapists. The problem is that cost can be an issue because this service is often not covered by health insurance plans and can be unaffordable.

For 40 years, Iona College’s Marriage and Family Therapy Center has been successfully helping many people with affordable professional counseling services for fees based on a sliding scale. It is the only such licensed program in the region providing pastoral counselor and marriage and family therapists under the supervision of licensed psychologists and AAMFT approved supervisors.

Should a feature story about this program be of interest to you, Iona College would be able to make available a couple and family who would be willing to talk to the media about their issues and experiences about how counseling has helped them. Interviews with the program’s counselors could also be arranged. Please let me know if this is interest. The days are getting shorter. Best,
